Effective January 1, 2019, The Regional Cancer Center medical oncology office will be operated by UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. As a result, the office will be staffed by UPMC Hillman Cancer Center employees. 

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is currently hiring for regular Full -Time Oncology Data Specialist I or II to help support the Hamot Medical Oncology office located in Erie, PA. 

This role will perform the abstracting functions of the UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside facility as well as any other UPMC facility, standalone cancer center, or office location assigned by the Manger, Clinical Registry Information Services.  The Specialist will interact effectively, courteously, and tactfully with physicians and other health care professionals to promote the registry and motivate its use.  This position will perform daily registry operations for the UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside location in accordance with UPMC Network Registry policies and procedures.  The specialist will abstract and code core clinical data using appropriate classifications systems; analyze medical records according to published guidelines and requirements of UPMC, American College of Surgeons (ACoS), Pennsylvania Department of Health, and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCAHO).  This role will obtain long term follow up data for end results reporting.


  • Provide timely and complete abstracting reviewing at the required standard that is dependent on the annual caseload.
  • Maintain minimally, in accordance with the Pennsylvania Department of Health standard, a data quality level of at least 97% for data items reviewed.
  • Maintain a follow up success rate of at least 90% for cases abstracted in a five-year timeframe, 80% for entire database.
  • Perform other functions and tasks required to maintain a current and accurate database and stay in compliance with the requirements of UPMC, American College of Surgeons (ACoS), Pennsylvania Department of Health, and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCAHO).



  • High school diploma. 
  • Associate's or Bachelors of Science degree in Health Information Management preferred. 
  • One year oncology or abstracting experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Proficient in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, abstracting techniques, AJCC and SEER summary staging systems, ICDO, ICD-10-CM, and/or other clinical coding systems.  
  • Experience with hospital data systems, Microsoft Office software products and/or personal computers. 
  • Accurate and efficient keyboarding skills necessary to meet productivity standards.


  • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) preferred. 
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) preferred.

Salary Range: $13.93 to $21.34
