Effective January 1, 2019, The Regional Cancer Center medical oncology office will be operated by UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. As a result, the office will be staffed by UPMC Hillman Cancer Center employees. 

UPMC Hillman CancerCenter is hiring a Manager, Cancer Data Sources to help support the Hamot Medical Oncology office located in Erie, PA.

This role will coordinate and manage the resources and activities associated with the efficient and effective functioning of the UPMC Network Registry and various Cancer Programs within the UPMC Health System.  This role will manage the workload of staff members located at multiple facilities.  The manager will plan, organize, direct and implement the activities of the fully integrated UPMC Network Registry in accordance with defined institutional objectives, regulations and standards.


  • Provide leadership in the establishment and maintenance of a functioning multi-campus, multi-institutional cancer registry network via planning, organizing and directing the activities of the UPMC Network Registry and its staff in accordance with hospital, UPMC Health System, state and federal regulations.
  •  Ensure timely, complete and accurate casefinding, abstracting, follow-up and data analysis functions in the UPMC Network Registry; designs and implements quality control and process improvement systems when necessary.
  •  Develop, modify and implement policies and procedures for the UPMC Network Registry consistent with requirements set forth by hospital, Health System, state and federal regulations.
  •  Monitor monthly reporting of required data sets to the Pennsylvania Department of Health in accordance with state law.
  •  Monitor monthly and annual expenditures for institutions under direct control and collaborates with administration at other member institutions to assure budget needs are met.
  •  Prepare, analyze, and submit statistical and/or narrative reports regarding registry productivity to administration on a regular basis.
  •  Develop volume projections and resource requirements for the UPMC Network Registry associated with trends in cancer care in the UPMC Health System and in accordance with annual goals and objectives.
  •  Identifies factors which may impact projections.
  •  Manages staffing needs at each of the member institutions by maintaining a flexible work environment.  Coordinates regular staff meetings.
  •  Recruit, interview, and select new employees; coordinates training of new employees.
  •  Work closely with software vendors to maintain cancer registry database application, perform data conversions when necessary.
  •  Work closely with the Directors for UPCI Centers of Excellence to establish and monitor data collection requirements and process improvement activities in the UPCI Network Registry.
  •  Improvement activities in the UPCI Network Registry.
  •  Establish and monitor patient care evaluation studies across the network for benchmarking purposes.
  •  Coordinate the approval and completion of data requests for cancer incidence statistics (non-research requests) from any individual, hospital or external agency.
  •  Works closely with administrative and medical staff to plan and provide multidisciplinary cancer committee meetings on at least a quarterly basis at all member institutions approved by the American College of Surgeons.
  •  Works closely with administrative and medical staff to develop annual goals for the cancer programs and UPMC Network Registry.
  •  Prepare the annual reports as required for direct reporting facilities and assists with the preparation of annual reports for other member institutions approved by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
  •  Work with cancer committee support staff to assure cancer conferences are held appropriate to hospital category and American College of Surgeons requirements for approved cancer programs.
  •  Work with the cancer committees and/or administrators from the member institutions to pursue educational objectives of the cancer program and Network Registry staff.
  •  Attend relevant educational, orientation, problem solving, project development, and other meetings as necessary or required and reports information at staff meetings or other relevant meetings.
  •  Act in the role of nosologist for the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian project funded by the National Cancer Institute, or assigns this task to appropriate staff


  • Minimum of three years experience or education pertaining to cancer registry required. 
  • Master's degree in Health Information Systems or related field with at least two years of management experience preferred. 
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully supervise a variety of projects and teams in order to meet deadlines. 
  • Must exhibit the ability to be flexible in response to sudden change in workload and/or personnel. 
  • Strong analytical skills using software applications is required. 
  • Proficient use of computers and a variety of health care information systems. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills necessary to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees throughout the UPMC Health System and UPMC Network Registry, administration, physicians, statisticians and clinical investigators. 
  • Writing skills to effectively develop proposals, project plans, policies and procedures, a variety of reports and general correspondence


  • Certified Tumor Registrar
  • Registered Health Information Administrator 

Salary Range: $19.25 to $33.33
