UPMC Shadyside is hiring a full-time nursing support staff for the Emergency Department.

Nursing Assistants (NAs) and Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) are vital partners in the patient care provided at UPMC. They work on patient care units and perform a variety of important basic and advanced skills. They work closely and continuously with patients, partnering with nurses and other professionals, to make a big difference in how patients recover and experience their hospital stay.

The role you will be selected for will be based upon your previous experience. Applicants without previous hospital experience who are hired will be provided -- and are required to successfully complete a training course. ***This course is held over 7 consecutive weekdays during daylight hours. Minimum salary for a Nursing Assistant is 13.31 per hour.

The work as an NA or PCT is both challenging and very rewarding. The NA or PCT provides routine patient care and support services in accordance with established policies and procedures, and may be directed by the nurse or physician, to assure that the highest degree of quality patient care is maintained at all times. Many find this to be a wonderful life long career. Others may choose to take the time while working as an NA or PCT to become familiar with the wide variety of health care roles they may want to pursue: nurse, respiratory therapist, pharmacist, physical therapist - the list is endless.

Responsibilities:
• Assisting patients with activities of daily living including assisting with bathing, dressing and other hygiene needs
• Interacting and attending to patients and their families on a regular basis, to ensure patient satisfaction
• Working hand in and hand with the nursing staff to report any changes in the patients well-being or changes in their conditions
• Working directly with patients to re-position and assist them in and out of beds, bedside chairs, and wheelchairs, as well as on and off patient carriers (with assistance as needed).
• Performing basic clinical skills such as weighing patients, taking blood pressures/pulses/respirations, collecting and measuring specimen
• Helping patients to walk with canes, walkers, and crutches.
• Assisting patients with their nutritional needs, including food preparation and set up
• Transporting patients, by pushing them in wheelchairs or on carts, to and from tests and other units.
• Depending upon the role, a PCT may also perform several advanced skills such as drawing blood, performing EKGs (heart monitor tracings), changing simple wound dressings, removing bladder catheters, and removing IV catheters from veins.
• Opportunity to support the unit through various clerical and administrative tasks

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. If no previous hospital or pre-hospital training, successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class OR successful completion of first year of clinical work in a nursing program. Successful completion of basic information system training. Microcomputer experience preferred. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. Nursing Student that has completed one clinical rotation preferred Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred. Successful completion of a basic arrhythmia course and annual competency required May in the course of their duties be in rooms where medications are stored or may transport medications when they transport patients. Transportation of medication is limited from one department to another.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire ACLS preferred

  • Act 31 Clearance
  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
