Job Purpose


UPMC Health Plan is interested in hiring an experienced Application Architect to make intuitive high-level decisions for software development. You will see the “big picture” and create architectural approaches for software design and implementation to guide the development team. The candidate in this role should be analytically minded, an excellent problem-solver, and able to work either independently or as part of a team. Under the direction of management, the Application Architect will champion the use of the overall Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). Also, he/she will lead coordination and orchestration of the overall system architecture and design which will deliver significant impact. The focus of this position will be to have a full mastery and in-depth understanding of the software architecture principles and mentor less experienced team members. Additionally, the Application Architect is responsible for defining technical requirements and the overall system architecture.



  • Designing and creating reference models and standards that specify a common structure or architectural style that promotes sharing of common responsibilities, using common services in a consistent fashion, supporting a common user interaction style and configuration mechanisms, using a standard technology platform, having common management, monitoring, and operations procedures.
  • Works to improve integration between applications, allow for sharing of common information, have consistent results for the same operation no matter how it is performed and reduce the cost and complexity of maintenance and enhancements.     
  • Partnering with leadership on the future state technology architectural strategy and roadmap, while contributing with innovative new solutions.
  • Leading DevOps initiatives and assists in performance and scalability planning; testing as required.
  • Providing technical leadership to the application development team. Participates in assignments concerning development of target conceptual and logical architectures for applications.
  • Leading evaluations of technologies and software products to determine feasibility and desirability of incorporating their capabilities within the company's products. Executing Proof of Concepts to aid in selection and creating sample code and modeling best practice use to enable streamlined and efficient implementation. Reviews and aligns product choices to avoid redundant effort and ensure enterprise architecture standards are met.
  • Actively participating in the Governance process associated with technology standards.
  • Performing design and code reviews
  • Develops and maintains the application architecture for specific business functional areas in compliance with the enterprise architecture.
  • Collaborating with other stakeholders to ensure the architecture is aligned with business requirements. Provides oversight on the architecture and design of an application within or across a line of business.
  • Collaborate with other professionals to determine functional and non-functional requirements for new software or applications
  • Develop high-level product specifications with attention to system integration and feasibility
  • Define all aspects of development from appropriate technology and workflow to coding standards
  • Communicate successfully all concepts and guidelines to development team. Participates in project and design reviews to evaluate and ensure that the design being applied meets, policies, principals, and standards.
  • Oversee progress of development team to ensure consistency with initial design
  • Provide technical guidance and coaching to developers and engineers
  • Ensure software meets all requirements of quality, security, modifiability, extensibility etc.
  • Approve final product before launch
  • Work with other enterprise architects to make sure that the given architecture is sound and follow long term corporate strategy.

Standard Responsibilities:

  • Proven experience as software architect with
  • Experience in software development and coding in various languages (C#, .NET, Java etc.)
  • Excellent knowledge of software and application design and architecture
  • Excellent knowledge of microservices’ architecture
  • Familiarity with HTML/CSS, JavaScript and UI/UX design
  • Understanding of software quality assurance principles
  • A technical mindset with great attention to detail
  • High quality organizational and leadership skills
  • Outstanding communication and presentation abilities
  • Experience with a health insurance company, TPA, or claim processor and a thorough understanding on the underlying structure of claims transactions
  • MSc/BS in computer science, engineering or relevant field
  • Agile and scrum methodologies is a must to know for this job.
  • Deep knowledge of developing complete systems. Mastery of the SDLC.
  • Highly driven and self-motivated to exceed expectations.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrated ability to lead in a team based environment.
  • Proficient in both oral and written communication.
  • Strong organizational skills – must be able to design, lead and manage teams composed of stakeholders across diverse teams/domains
  • Experience with SOA standards, including SOAP, REST, WSDL, XML, XSD, XSLT, UDDI and WSI.
  • Experience with security and privacy standards; e.g. HIPAA, HITRUST is a plus
  • Experience with SQL & RDMS
  • Experience in IBM technology stack is a plus
  • Experience with SQL and NO-SQL databases is a plus

Salary Range: $49.98 to $81.42 / hour
