UPMC is looking for a Financial Counselor to join their CancerCenter team at the Upper St. Clair location.  This fulfilling role is under the general direction of the Manager/POS Coordinator of Patient Access.  The Counselor assist patients with financial arrangements, billing questions and payment problems in accordance with the revenue cycle guidelines.

  • Assist with inquiries from walk-in patients regarding billing problems in conjunction with the Patient Business Services Department.
  • Assists with other office functions as required.
  • Counsel patients and family on insurance matters, outside resources and patient's financial liability.
  • Determine an estimated liability based on expected charges and potential coverage for all urgent/unscheduled patients, when time allows.
  • Direction and guidance should be sought from the Team Lead or Department Manager as necessary.
  • Follow up with patients when applicable.
  • Identify alternate payment or provider options based on departmental policy and procedure, and patient willingness to pay.
  • Identify/counsel potential and repeat/recurring bad debt patients to prevent the rendering of non-urgent services.
  • Initiate/complete requests for Charity Applications.
  • Monitor in-house patients for the expiration of third party benefits.
  • Monitor long stay cases to ensure appropriateness of prior payment arrangements made for patient balances, renegotiates terms as needed.
  • Negotiate payment of liability for elective/scheduled services, collecting the same upon admission/registration if possible.
  • Respect patient confidentiality and withholds restrictive information according to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act guidelines.
  • Support and contribute to UPMC service excellence mission and abides by all UPMC departmental policies, procedures and goals in the process of performing all job responsibilities.
  • The incumbent must utilize good judgment and a team spirit in carrying out job functions.
  • Verify insurance and other benefits with patient's employer, insurance company, or other agency for all admissions and specific outpatient services for all urgent/unscheduled patients.
  • Work activities are performed independently, utilizing basic guidelines as standards of performance.


  • Completion of High School graduation or equivalent. 
  • Two years experience in a medical/billing/fiscal or customer service function in a Healthcare setting working with various aspects of the Revenue Cycle. 
  • Medical terminology, third party health care coverage experience and strong understanding of managed care regulations is required. 
  • Experience with a personal computer based applications and other various office equipment with proficient typing skills with a minimum of 30 words per minute. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills are required. 
  • Initiative to work productively with minimum supervision. 
  • Able to work under pressure.
