UPMC Presbyterian is excited to be hiring a Specimen Processor II to help support the anatomic (surgical) pathology department! This role will be scheduled 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. or 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday! 

Must have two years of specimen processing experience.

Perform the duties of a Laboratory Specimen Processor regularly. Assist the section supervisor in organizing and monitoring the work of subordinates and assist in training new Laboratory Specimen Processors.

  • Answer telephone and provide test and result information; call statistical and critical results to units.
  • Assign charge codes and deliver to patient accounting. Follow health and safety regulations.
  • Assist supervisor in ensuring that processing duties are performed according to procedures and established guidelines and that subordinates adhere to standards for safely handling specimens.
  • Assume some of the supervisor's responsibilities in the supervisors absence, i.e., assure smooth operation of the section, adjust work schedules, collect and turn in time sheets for section when they are due and serve as a resource person for the processing section.
  • Attend departmental and section meetings. Perform routine technical and related clerical duties as directed.
  • Demonstrate service orientation approach by conveying courtesy, respect, enthusiasm and a positive attitude in work situations. Show initiative and offer assistance in the completion of the department's work.
  • Determine correct specimen type. Assign accession number. Complete quality assurance forms. Centrifuge and pull off specimens; store at appropriate temperature.
  • Ensure correct patient/specimen identification.
  • Ensure that adequate quantities of supplies are available for efficient operations, inventory supplies and informs superior of needs.
  • Enter data and results from requisitions into the laboratory computer.
  • Enter patient results onto requisitions and fill appropriate copies.
  • May be asked to conduct special projects and time studies at the request of superior.
  • Participate in the orientation and training of new employees.
  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.Perform other duties as assigned.Indicates essential job responsibilities.
  • Prepare, package and send specimens to referral laboratories.
  • Provide advice and/or assistance to subordinates in the performance of non-routine/difficult duties.
  • Regularly perform the duties of Laboratory Specimen Processor - Receive and sort (neonatal, pediatric, adult & geriatric) specimens.
  • Schedule, conduct, and review the orientation and training of new laboratory specimen processors, technicians and students.
  • Verify that correct specimens and bar code labels are received.


  • High school graduate. 
  • 2 years of experience as a laboratory specimen processor in order to acquire a thorough knowledge of sectional procedures, laboratory and sectional policies and procedures. 
  • Effective troubleshooting and interpersonal skills.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
