Support the provision of pharmaceutical care to patients at the UPMC Health System under the general direction of the Pharmacy Manager and the general supervision of the Staff Pharmacist. These services will be provided in compliance with state and federal regulations, JCAHO Standards and the mission and policies of the hospital and department.

  • Assist in the procurement, accountability, storage, preparation and distribution of investigation and study drugs.
  • Assist in the provision of the proper oral and injectable medications (including intravenous admixtures) for the correct patient for administration at the appropriate time. Use proper technique in the preparation of medications. Initial/date product as required.
  • Assist in the training of pharmacy personnel and students.
  • Audit and maintain accurate records for controlled substances. Assure that all such drugs are stored and dispensed in compliance with Federal, State and Department Regulations.
  • Maintain all patient information and records. Maintain the pharmacy computer system as required.
  • Maintain and update automated medstations, unit and department stock, emergency boxes and crash carts.
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement activities in order to continually improve and evaluate pharmaceutical care as reflected by operational and patient care indicators.
  • Prepare cytotoxic and hazardous drugs (e.g. Chemotherapy).
  • Procure and maintain adequate inventory levels on daily basis.
  • Provide and procure information (via telephone, person-to-person or written) to hospital personnel, patients and visitors. Refer all drug information questions to Staff Pharmacists.


  • Completion of High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • One of the following is required: Completion of a pharmacy technician program, or six months pharmacy technician experience, or six months experience working as a pharmacy assistant at UPMC, or enrollment in good standing as a student.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • CCM training is required within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter
  • Act 31 Clearance
  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Comprehensive Crisis Management
