Coordinate with various departments and physicians to determine medical surgical equipment needs to be installed as a part of hospital construction projects. Work closely with outside vendors and supply chain management to ensure that equipment specifications are accurately communicated to the architects and engineers for incorporation into the construction documents.

  • Communicate with UPMC Biotronics department to recycle medical equipment within the UPMC system as appropriate.
  • Maintain an on-going knowledge of the current medical equipment trends, updating the procurement standards as needed. 
  • Communicate with Supply Chain Management regarding new types of equipment and coordinate trials of new equipment with the clinical user.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the existing facilities and their utilization on the Oakland and Shadyside campuses. 
  • Collaborate with construction management personnel, supply chain management personnel, outside vendors, contractors and design professionals to assure comprehensive satisfaction of the end user for all projects assigned. 
  • Oversee all aspects of the projects including, design, planning, estimating, scheduling and construction management services. 
  • Oversee the bidding and/or negotiation phase of the construction projects to obtain the best prices for the work. 
  • Develop and monitor the construction project budgets. 
  • Communicate monthly budget status to senior management and the Program Director, Construction. 
  • Establish written project timelines and communicate them to the administrative sponsor of the project and the Program Director, Construction. 
  • Review construction documents prepared by the A+E firms for accuracy, constructability and value engineering ideas. 
  • Maintain an on-going knowledge of external regulations and the impact on the construction process.  
  • Arrange for the necessary regulatory inspections during the project
  • Manage the acquisition, delivery and installation of equipment for projects. Attend the construction meetings to understand the timeline and orders equipment to meet timelines.
  • Obtain equipment cost estimates and advise the project managers.
  • Order all medical equipment for the projects and coordinate with the project management team to be certain that the equipment is installed correctly and in a timely fashion.
  • Provide consultation to other UPMC hospitals as appropriate.
  • Work with the project management team and users to determine the equipment to be ordered for specific projects. This includes the type of beds, monitoring systems, equipment booms, special treatment lighting, etc. Review the equipment list with the responsible department representative.


  • Bachelors degree in Engineering, Basic Science or related technical field is required. 
  • Three years of planning experience in a hospital setting or working in the hospital equipment industry OR a minimum of five years of business related experience. 
  • Solid knowledge of hospital construction and health care equipment is required. 
  • Good project management skills are required. 
  • Strong collaboration, communication and teamwork skills are required.

  • Act 31 Clearance
  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
