Description

Purpose:
Under supervision of Faculty or Research Associate, accurately completes research projects according to established study design and procedures.

The department focuses their research on HIV and IBD in relation to the gastrointestinal tract. Their research examines products and devices to prevent and treat these ailments of the GI tract. This individual will be performing approved research projects according to defined protocols and procedures. They will also handle clinical trials samples for processing and storage according to study specific documentation.

This position is grant funded. 

Responsibilities:
  • Assist in obtaining educational resources necessary to perform and interpret research and to remain abreast in research area of function.
  • Follow appropriate research policies and procedures including all applicable laws and regulations and maintains scientific integrity including accurate data storage.
  • Follow the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
  • Maintain a safe clean laboratory-working environment including appropriate equipment maintenance and usage, by conforming to laboratory and hospital policies and standards.
  • Maintain laboratory inventory, including timely ordering and receipt of required supplies and their proper storage.
  • Perform approved research projects according to defined protocols and procedures including appropriate collection, recording, storage, and analysis of data, and reporting of results.
  • Prepare, label, store and dispose of reagents, and calibrates equipment for research projects.
  • Responsible for following the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in biology or other basic science.
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity necessary for handling and processing specimens for testing, including preparation of specimens, operation of laboratory equipment, microscopic examination, etc.  
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately collect, store and interpret research data.
  • Lab experience preferred (including time in an undergraduate program).
  • Background in any of the following assay types would be helpful: Flow cytometry, PCR, explant models, MSD/Luminex, ELISA analysis, HPV detection assays, DNA/RNA extraction.
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity necessary for handling and processing specimens for testing, including preparation of specimens, operation of laboratory equipment, microscopic examination, etc. 
  • Ability to accurately collect, store and interpret research data.
  • Ability to use common computer programs such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
