Description

Purpose:
Assist chairside the general dentists, hygienists, and dental specialists as a four-handed expanded duties dental assistant. Dental specialties include pediatric dentistry, full orthodontics, prosthodontics, oral-maxillo facial surgery and operating room dentistry. Assistant in this position, based on need, will assist in one of the specialty areas in their particular area of strength/expertise for the better overall operations of the center.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist dentist in performing dental and surgical procedures.
  • Call patients to confirm appointments.
  • Clean operatories between patients' use and according to hospital protocol for infectious diseases.
  • Daily maintenance of dental equipment such as X-ray machine, hand pieces, developers, central suction, etc. As specified in the OSHA and Infection Control Manuals, documenting work records as required.
  • Expose and develop/process dental radiographs (intra-oral, panorex and cephalometric radiographs).
  • Meet all standards of performance and adhere to all applicable policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Operate X-ray equipment and take radiographs as needed.
  • Order supplies.
  • Participate in mandatory hospital programs including but not limited to those on Hazardous Materials (MSDS), Infection Control (OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard) (TB Plan) and general safety.
  • Perform all functions, with or without accommodation, in a manner that poses no direct threat to self or to others.
  • Perform blood pressures, making referrals when necessary.
  • Perform proper dental charting and recording of the assessment treatment plans for patient examinations as well as documenting the patient dental record related to treatment education (age-specific) or patient communication for continuum of case, as relates to the dental assistant.
  • Pour and finish cast study models.
  • Prepare instruments/hand pieces for sterilization in the UPMC Braddock Central Sterilization Department.
  • Provide and document patient/caregiver age-specific education related to oral health and provide community/group dental education through various projects/settings.
  • Seat patients in operatories.
  • Set up trays for restorative and surgical procedures.
  • Stock operatories-restorative and surgery.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completed a structure dental assisting program in four-handed dentistry (or have 3 years of equivalent work experience).
  • Certification in field preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills and work well as a member of a team in order to deliver excellent patient care. Previous dental specialty experience preferred (ortho., pediatric, operating room). High motivation and good organizational skills preferred. Institutional experience preferred. Ability to meet attendance/scheduling requirements. Ability to understand and react effectively to the unique needs of the age group served.
