Description

The Infection Control Department at UPMC Mercy has a full time medical director, 4 infection preventionists and administrative support. A Bachelor’s degree and CIC certification are required for this opportunity.

Purpose:

The manager is responsible for the overall leadership and direction of the assigned Infection Control team. Assumes a leadership role in assuring infection control initiatives, process improvement efforts, and staff and patient education, meet all infection control standards and regulations for assigned hospitals. The manager is responsible for the management and day to day operations of the infection control departments for the assigned facilities.

Responsibilities:
  • Assumes a leadership role in the development and implementation of process improvement opportunities and education related to clinical practice that support organizational goals, and related infection control practices
  • Assures appropriate care and services for patients and families through interdisciplinary partnerships and consultation of hospital staff and other members of the health care team through participation on committees and other related activities.
  • Assures that all necessary policies and procedures are in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Coordinates and assures surveillance of hospitals to generate infection statistics through review of medical records, and other significant data for review at committee meetings
  • Develops relationships both internally and externally to integrate and share best infection control practices across settings.
  • Initiates change, incorporates hospital cultures, and best practice to standardize infection control practices across campuses
  • Interacts with other departments of the assigned facilities to assure infection control standards are met
  • Member of the infection control committees and other related committees that require infection control input
  • Oversees all operations of the assigned infection control departments including hiring, performance development, training and all other competencies
  • Oversees and monitors all infection control practices for both campuses, including appropriate isolation, hand hygiene, regulatory functions and standards related to infection control practices etc.
  • Oversees infection control staff at assigned campuses to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and to employ national best practices for patient safety
  • Partners with leadership at assigned locations and the System to design and implement organizational strategies to achieve safe, quality standards within infection control
  • Serves as the overall internal and external resource for infection control activities at assigned campuses

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Nursing, Microbiology, Medical Technology or related field required 
  • Masters degree preferred  
  • 5 years of infection control experience required  
  • Previous Management Experience preferred  
  • Knowledge of all regulatory, and state and federal requirements for infection control practices 
  • Knowledge of current Medicare and other P4P activities related to infection control, hospital acquired conditions, and patient safety indicators 
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, relationships with executives, managers, physicians, staff, patients and families 
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, and handle multiple changing priorities  
  • Exemplary critical thinking skills, analytical and problem solving abilities Demonstrates a progressive leadership track  
  • Skilled in various data and other computer applications
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Current Certified in Infection Control (CIC) certification required.  
Registered Nurses are required to maintain current RN licensure.

  • Certification in Infection Control
