University of Pittsburgh Physicians is hiring a Full-Time OP Nurse Coordinator II (RN) to support the Hermitage Urgent Care office located in Hermitage, PA.

This will be a regular full time position working three 12 hour daylight shifts per week from 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM and 4 hours of administrative time (40 hours).

The Professional Practice Coordinator is a Registered Nurse and is a member of the care delivery team. The Professional Practice Coordinator is responsible for the care of the patient in a global view, accountable for multiple aspects of the patient care package even when patient contact is minimized. 

The Professional Nurse Coordinator uses independent judgment and continued communication with the patient, family, physician and community resources to assist the patient in attaining a measure of outpatient health. The Professional Practice Coordinator is responsible to set the standards for the level and quality of care. 

The Professional Practice Coordinator maintains daily accountability for the clinical and administrative operations of the assigned practice. The Professional Practice Coordinator assures overall efficiency and quality care to the patients served. The Professional Practice Coordinator demonstrates a commitment to the community and to the nursing profession.

  • 1. Guides daily workflow and assigns tasks to other healthcare staff. Routinely provides feedback on performance.
  • 10. Develops process for inventory of all supplies and medications. Ensures proper controls are in order. Develops schedule and triggers for re-ordering clinical supplies. Works with vendors to eliminate any delays as needed. Practices and encourages effective cost containment measures by economical use of equipment, supplies and personnel.
  • 11. Provides training and re-training as needed to new and existing staff.
  • 12. Rolls out new initiatives for the Urgent Care and develops policies/procedures as needed. In addition, communicates to staff and trains accordingly.
  • 13. Develops clinical policies and procedures. Ensures staff is adhering to policies/procedures/duties on a day to day basis.
  • 14. Performs all competencies for the core clinical positional and works side by side with other staff on a daily basis.
  • 15. Identifies opportunities for clinical quality as well as workplace improvement. Applies evidence based practice as a regular aspect of professional practice.
  • 16. Maintains, strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data, and enforces HIPAA standards and regulations.
  • 17. Ensures that incident and accident reports (including medication error reports), are completed and submitted on a timely basis.
  • 18. Performs in accordance with system wide competencies and behaviors.
  • 2. Develops schedules for staff in an equitable manner. Will also act as a back up for call offs, scheduling issues and emergencies. This includes all staff except physicians and mid-level providers.
  • 3. Manages day to day operations of the Urgent Care including all facility issues on an as needed basis.
  • 4. Demonstrates highly developed clinical assessment and analytical skills.
  • 5. Ensures all QA processes and procedures for the Urgent Care are performed on a routine basis. Complies with requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies (i.e., OSHA, PA Department of Health, etc.) and completes compliance audits and related activities.
  • 6. Organizes and streamlines treatment rooms, supply rooms, etc. to ensure the most efficient method to deliver care to patients.
  • 7. Promotes positive patient relations and strives to achieve patient/family satisfaction.
  • 8. Ensures that nursing documentation is complete, accurate, and in compliance with UPMC and appropriate regulatory standards.
  • 9. Communicates and collaborates effectively with other staff members as required (e.g., physicians, faculty, administration, other hospital personnel).
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families. Supervisory/leadership ability to evaluate staff, address issues appropriately and continually monitor and improve clinical services provided. Excellent communications skills in order to effect relationships with physicians, extenders and staff that create an atmosphere of service excellence to patients. Ability to analyze difficult and complex situations smoothly and efficiently. Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment. High level clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care. Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process. Mobility and visual manual dexterity. Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.
  • Assumes responsibility for day-to-day operations of the practice while continuing to function clinically when necessary. Serves as the departmental role model in all aspects of patient and community care. Oversees program and patient coordination activities to ensure program goals and objectives are achieved by providing direction to staff, maintaining efficient operations and overseeing quality of patient care provided. Develop and optimize the clinical care tools of the practice and the physicians (scheduling templates, space, staffing mix and patient care protocols) that improve the quality of the overall product delivered to the patient. Determine and flex staffing standards based on patient care needs, patient flow, medical acuity, procedures, staff skills and other clinical needs.
  • Assumes responsibility for developing, marketing and coordinating programs to provide education and enhance consumer awareness. Accountable for managing the interviewing, selection, hiring, training, evaluating, and progressive discipline process of staff. Demonstrates knowledge of adult learning principles (and/or teaching children if applicable) and applies in teaching of patients, families, students and new staff. Provides detailed and appropriate teaching to patients and families to effectively guide them through the episode of care both in the office setting and via phone/written communication when at home. Serves as the primary nursing liaison for the development of a total care plan to patient and family. Supports the development of students, new staff and colleagues and supports shared governance through practice-based teams and structures. Organizes orientation, training, preceptor initiation, preceptor selection, preceptor training and evaluation period of new staff in department. Creates an environment of open dialogue, inquiry and continuous development by asking for feedback and improving practice.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking in the identification of clinical, social, safety, psychological and spiritual issues for the patient care within an episode of care. Practices solid communication skills, and is able to articulate and translate the patient's condition to other care providers and to negotiate and make recommendations for changes in patient care and office practices. Patient documentation is comprehensive and promotes communication between caregivers. Incorporates national professional organization as well as business unit and health system's goals to improve patient safety, quality and satisfaction. Creates a caring and compassionate patient focused experience by building healing relationships with patients, families and colleagues.
  • Demonstrates the ability to create a shared vision that applies critical thinking skills and utilizes conceptual knowledge in the development of the departmental vision. Demonstrates accountability for professional development that improves the quality of professional practice and the quality of patient care. Establishes expectations and model behaviors that demonstrate service excellence to staff and physicians and focuses on the patient as the primary customer. Functions as a leader in practice-based shared governance, goal setting and supports the change and transition process to improve quality of care and the practice environment.
  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by demonstrating accountability for actions, enthusiasm, motivation and commitment to patients and colleagues. Resolves and manages conflict in a smooth and timely manner. Demonstrates an understanding of cultural differences and holds peers accountable for healthy relationships.   • Identify potential problem areas, develop a system for objectively monitoring performance, and creatively seek solutions to foster quality improvement. Actively manages all aspects of regulatory compliance, including all outside agencies and audits as well as internal requirements, such as core competencies and training. Actively manages department or practice-specific quality improvement efforts. Identifies opportunity for quality improvement to colleagues and management. Takes personal responsibility in improving patient satisfaction with the quality of care and service. Utilizes research and evidence-based practice to support improvement in clinical care: identifies research issues or articles related to clinical specialty or areas of interest
  • Serves as a highly engaged and full partner on the care team and responds willingly to care team member needs for assistance and partnership. Participates in work that improves patient care and the professional practice environment. Adapts to change and demonstrates flexibility with the change process. Oversees daily operations of practice with regards to patients, staff, physicians and ancillary support/departments. Assist management team or assume formal leadership responsibilities when necessary in the following: budget and financial formulation, staff levels and coverage, human resource management, departmental development and education and safety/regulatory reporting and preparation.


  • Minimum 3 years Nursing Experience. 
  • BSN preferred. 
  • Rating of Solid/Strong/Good or higher on most recent performance evaluation
  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below. 
  • They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patients status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patients requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures. 

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse. CPR Certification UPMC approved national certification required. UPMC Professional Contribution required CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
