UPMC Health Plan is hiring a full-time Planning/Reporting Analyst II. This is a Monday through Friday (8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) position based out of downtown Pittsburgh, PA. The Analyst will provide support to UPMC Health System senior leadership in new business development, account management, and on-going activities by participating in planning and marketing activities which may include market analysis and research, strategic planning, competitive analysis, direct marketing, and reporting trends.



Experience using SQL to write reports is required.

  • Demonstrate effective planning and organizational skills in order to complete job responsibilities accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in basic and advanced tool sets as required to complete work assignments such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Onyx, Internet, Access, and Actuate.
  • Demonstrate technical/computer proficiency with the Department's tool sets.
  • Effectively represent department on workgroups based upon knowledge of data and projects.
  • Effectively utilize the standard planning methodologies, report formats and documentation procedures.
  • Efficiently design and complete projects with minimal supervision.
  • Exhibit excellent performance in all job responsibilities of a Planning and Reporting Analyst I.
  • Extract data and develop well-written, high quality draft reports with virtually 100% accuracy including numerical accuracy, correct header/footers and easy-to-understand formatting.
  • Extract data, prepare ad-hoc reports, complete complex surveys, and develop new profiles, data books, white papers and presentations.
  • Independently craft data searches, manipulate findings, analyze data, identify trends and significant find and validate findings.
  • Independently identify critical activities and tasks, offers recommendations and/or suggest alternatives to meet project timelines and adjust priorities accordingly.
  • Lead in identifying what sources to use to derive specific data.
  • Learn about UPMC Health Plan business lines, services, markets served, and competitors.
  • Maintain organized files of supporting documentation.
  • Read industry, regional and local news, understand implications and applies to job.
  • Serve as a resource to peers to explain, teach and advance understanding of the tool sets.
  • Troubleshoot problems prior to forwarding issues to manager.
  • Understand data limitations, caveat and alternative sources.
  • Utilize Department standards for common analyses (e.g., defining market areas, target markets and patient origin).
  • Utilize analytical skills to gather, manipulate and interpret data.
  • Utilize previous assignments and their findings to streamline projects.
  • Work with manager, develop new templates for organizing, analyzing and presenting data.


  • B.S. degree in Health Services Administration, Business Administration or a quantitative field of study (i.e., mathematics, physics, economics, sciences, finance, IT, etc.) with 3 years of relevant experience required.
  • Masters degree in a similarly related field preferred.
  • Relevant experience in quantitative/computers, analytical/research and writing/presentation.
  • Experience using Onyx/lka or other Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software, or other relevant software packages is preferred.
  • Strong organizational, writing/presentation/communication, project management, analytical and problem-solving skills and have meticulous attention to detail.
