As a Medical Writer, you will join a world-renowned team of investigators and physicians, to develop cutting-edge clinical trial protocols and grant proposals to advance the research mission in oncology. Medical writer will work closely with the Vice President of Clinical Research and Deputy Director of Research Administration to enhance clinical trial and research portfolio

  • Assist PI in IRB and other regulatory documentation preparation and submission and address contingencies.
  • Assist PI in the development of Oncology and Immunotherapy based investigator-initiated clinical trials by merging required language from external vendors/manufacturers, with the sponsor-investigator concept in the format of the institutional protocol template. Coordinate protocol development and draft development in multi-modality clinical trials (eg: clinical trials involving Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology and Radiation Oncology)
  • Assists Vice President of Clinical Research in preparing clinical trial activity reports and addressing improvements in pre and post-award processes and clinical trials execution.
  • Clinical Trial Schema/Regulatory Documents/Budgets: 
    • Assists the Clinical Research Finance in coverage analysis, and in the budgeting of clinical trials to ensure all the procedures and events are adequately compensated. Drafts and edits consent forms to accurately represent study procedures, financial liabilities and other significant disclosures as per the IRB requirements
  • Clinical Trials and Interdisciplinary Projects: 
    • Independently draft, format, and proof-read internal and external documentation for clinical trial submission
    • Assists Director and the Cancer Center faculty with various clinical research projects involving scientific documents such as LOI and clinical protocols for investigator-initiated trials, co-operative group trials, consortium trials.
  • Grant proposals: 
    • Work with PIs and research fellows to prepare, write and edit clinical protocols, grant proposals involving clinical trials (eg: SPORE, R21, R01) and progress reports. Provide review and proofreading support for internal and external documents to ensure consistency and accuracy
  • Knowledgeable of interdisciplinary clinical research: 
    • Stays abreast of clinical research projects that his team is involved in, as well as new developments in the field. This includes attending tumor board meetings, oncology-related grand rounds and other meetings called by team leadership, as well as other scientific meetings. Interact with community-based oncologists in developing multi-center clinical trial proposals.
  • Manuscript/Publications:  
    • Assist principal investigators (PIs) to write and edit scientific manuscripts for publication as needed 
    • Assures compliance with UPMC, University of Pittsburgh and study sponsor policies, rules, and regulations to meet federal, state, and local standards. 
    • Contact journal editors to clarify manuscript standards as needed before submission; analyze and draft responses to reviewer critiques received on grant proposals and manuscripts Other scientific/medical writing tasks as assigned by the Hillman Cancer Center's leadership


  • Required: Bachelors degree Biomedical Sciences or Nursing or Pharmacy or in a related field or MD or an equivalent medical degree. 
  • Preferred: Masters or doctoral degree Medicine/Nursing/Pharmacy/Biomedical Sciences or a related field. 
  • Required: Four years experience in communications, writing and editing technical/scientific material in a medical, academic or clinical research setting. 
  • With a preferred degree, two years of required experience.  
  • Preferred: Strong background in clinical cancer research and immunotherapy. 
  • Advanced written and oral communications skills, attention to detail, and ability to interact effectively with internal and external customers. 
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills especially Word and Excel

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Editor in the Life Sciences (ELS), Certification or Advanced Certification through the American Medical Writer's Association (AMWA)
