UPMC Jameson is excited to be hiring a full-time Lab Assistant! This position will be scheduled rotating shifts with rotating weekend and holiday responsibilities. 

In this role, you will plant/process microbiology specimens and perform routine clerical functions in the microbiology laboratory. Previous lab or phlebotomy experience preferred. 

  • Accessions Histology Specimens and carries out other duties as assigned
  • As required, performs related clerical duties, and utilizes various computer functions to accurately enter demographic information into the information system(s), enters test orders, receives, cancels, charges, and credit tests, while ascertaining adequacy of patient information as well as sample identity.
  • Assist in the processing of cytology specimens, when assigned.
  • Completely procures venipuncture specimens on outpatients and/or inpatients.
  • Coordinates filing and retrieval of cytology slides.
  • Orders and maintains adequate general supplies for the lab.
  • Perform all aspects of specimen processing
  • Perform routine clerical functions by maintaining accurate and complete cytology records of test results.
  • Prepare specimens at work stations for testing, including labeling, accessioning, and aliquotting.
  • Reference Lab Processing: As required, learn to process various reference lab specimens accurately, according to temperature and proper identification requirements.
  • Specimen Processing: As required, performs related clerical duties, and utilizes various computer functions to accurately enter dempgraphic information in the information system(s). enters test order, receives, cancels, charges, and credits tests, while ascertaining adeaquecy of patient information as well as sample identity.


  • High school diploma or GED. 
  • Knowledge of biology/chemistry gained through high school science courses. 
  • Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program preferred. 
  • Minimum 6 months experience performing phlebotomy preferred. 
  • Medical terminology knowledge and laboratory information system experience preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Act 31 Clearance
  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
