UPMC Corporate Health Services seeks a full-time Director of Workforce Management to support various human resources and automated scheduling systems across the entire UPMC enterprise. This position will work standard daylight hours, Monday through Friday. Some travel to UPMC hospitals will be required periodically to implement and support our scheduling resource.

As Director of Workforce Management, you will effectively maximize and integrate utilization of human resources and automated scheduling system across UPMC in a cost effective manner, which meets and/or exceeds productivity, and worked hour benchmarks, employee engagement and budgetary goals. You will provide leadership to day-to-day operation, implementation, support, and delivery of technology solutions and responsible for the coaching and development of direct reports, implementing change management strategies with business level leaders to achieve business goals.

  • Communication and Process Improvement - Develops processes for communication in order to keep participants per each phase, and keeps UPMC leadership updated on progress, status reports, and changes in a timely manner.
  • Solicits feedback and information to refine and improve processes and achieve desired outcomes. Designs and implements with participants and stakeholders opportunities for continuous process improvement.
  • Continuous Education - Develops programs, coordinates training and provides oversight for end users (Super Users, staff, business liaisons, etc.)
  • Coordinates ongoing education of functional system administrators. Point of contact for software upgrades. Participates in API Healthcare client offerings, such as educational programs, webcasts, and client conferences.
  • Develops Processes For Stabilization And Optimization: - Integrates principles of program management to develop processes for stabilization and optimization. Serves as a leader, change agent, facilitator, participant and resource. Assists with the development of policies and procedures to ensure stabilization of program and effective utilization by end-users. Provides administrative oversight to the integration of ShiftSelect into management of workforces as it relates to patient care and productivity management at the department and/or unit level. Monitors data and collects information that will assist with identifying opportunities for ShiftSelect enhancements. Assists UPMC Executive Team with establishing priorities for normalizing operations.
  • Facilitate Contract Process And Renewal For ShiftSelect. - Maintain a current contract and annual performance review for executive evaluation.
  • Coordinate the contract review process with executive leadership and legal staff.
  • Participate in contract negotiations with UPMC Leadership and vendor.
  • Facilitates communication between IS and Clinical Operations to stabilize and optimize ShiftSelect
  • Leads and facilitates clinical teams to refine workflows and procedures to standardize ShiftSelect operations in order to achieve consistency across UPMC.
  • Collaborates with IS to develop a support plan for end users of ShiftSelect as this system becomes fully operationalized across UPMC.
  • Integration Into Normal Operational Processes Monitors Data And Collects Information: - Identifies issues and opportunities for ShiftSelect enhancements. Monitors data collection and analysis.
  • Monitors And Manages The Implementation Plans: - Collaborates with all units and/or departments, financial leadership per hospital, executive leadership, and API Healthcare during implementation phases. Builds networks both internally and with API Healthcare focused on productivity management. Serves as a leader, change agent, facilitator, participant and resource during implementation. Creates a climate that promotes open communication and effective working relationships with numerous departments and to coordinate workflow and resources. Deploys resources in an effective and fiscally responsible manner. Monitors progress and outcomes against pre-determined goals/objectives for implementation. Proactively intervenes to resolve issues, remove barriers, and address concerns.
  • Outcome Management - Continues to collaborate with UPMC leadership and VP and Admin of Hospital Operations to ensure achievement of budgetary benchmarks, employee satisfaction, and maximization of effective staffing (productivity management).
  • Assists the UPMC leadership in outcome monitoring (data collection and analysis) related to staff productivity benchmarks and standards of patient care.
  • Utilize expertise in quantitative analysis to assist clinical administrators and business liaisons with efficient workforce management and strategic business planning needs - Assist Administrators and Business Liaisons with budgetary preparation for core staffing plans.
  • Review with Business Liaisons and service line leadership productivity, time and attendance management, staffing reports for cost avoidance opportunities and assist development/actualization of a workforce strategic plan.
  • Monitor overtime and incentive utilization and facilitate Business Liaisons identifying and communicating opportunities for improvement
  • Works in Coordination with VP Of Hospital Operations, VP Of Service Lines, Administrators and Executive Team for Implementation and Integration of a Productivity Management Strategic Action Plan for UPMC. Coordinates Implementation Plans: - Participates and assists with the Executive Team, Leadership, and API Healthcare Project Leadership in designing implementation plans for ShiftSelect according to strategic productivity plan.
  • Coordinates and participates with teams in identification of implementation processes, tasks, timelines, and resources required to support the successful implementation of ShiftSelect. Develops networks, team approach, and positive relationships among participants for each implementation phase to ensure successful achievement. Responsible for coordinating and participating in designing ShiftSelect education plans for all UPMC departments/units per phase of implementation.


  • BS Degree in Nursing required.
  • Masters degree in Nursing or related health care field required, either at time of hire/transfer, or must be enrolled in a program within one year of hire/transfer date and completed within three years of enrollment. (i.e. public health, informational technology, administration, etc.)
  • 5 years of related experience (3 of which are in a leadership capacity)
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must possess a demonstrated understanding or management skills and ability to exercise independent judgment, while interacting with executives, leaders, and staff and outside agencies.
  • Exceptional personal computer skills and experience is a must.
  • Strong project management, problem solving, organizational, relationship, communication, and negotiation skills (oral and written) are required.
  • Strong understanding of IT strategy and how it relates to business objectives. 
  • Ability to apply extensive experience to highly complex problems.
