Western Psychiatric Institute & Clinic is currently hiring for part-time Milieu Therapists!  The Milieu Therapist role is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience in the behavioral health field and gain exposure to different patient populations and a variety of mental health diagnoses.  Candidates must be able to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.



The Milieu Therapist I performs assigned tasks, assumes responsibilities delegated by Senior personnel and participates as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, in various aspects of patient care with an emphasis on therapeutic activities conducted with assigned individuals and groups.


  • Coordinates patient groups and activities.
  • Facilitates or co-facilitates psychoeducational and therapeutic activity groups effectively. Encourages or assists patients to perform activities of daily living. Accompanies patients to out-of-building activities and appointments. Documents in the Medical Record according to established policies. Manages crisis situations effectively using positive approaches. Demonstrates effective milieu management skills, which promote positive patient experiences. Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment. Provides clinical interventions assessed by client needs.
  • Maintains competency requirements. Attends a minimum of 2 unit based or Institute wide inservices yearly. Learns and utilizes up-to-date technology and practices in delivery of patient care. Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary meetings and other activities. Maintains on-going communication with appropriate staff. Performs assigned work in a timely and productive manner. Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree in Mental Health or related field from an accredited college or University is required. 
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. 
  • Relevant group/individual experience with therapeutic and leisure oriented activities is strongly preferred. 
  • Physically capable of providing direct total physical care to unpredictable, potentially violent mentally ill patients as necessary, including lifting, supporting, running towards or away from areas where problems are occurring and pushing and pulling equipment such as wheel chairs. 
  • May in the course of their job duties be in rooms where medications are stored. No contact with medications is allowed. In the course of duties may be asked to distribute medications to the nurse at the bedside. Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Comprehensive Crisis Management - CCM training is required within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter
