The Veterinary Technician provides appropriate care and medical treatment to the laboratory animals.  This position will assist in implementation of Magee Women's Research Institute's animal care and use program.  Will interact heavily with investigators and will assist with procedures, anesthesia, husbandry, and other tasks.

  • Administers medications, restrains or performs euthanasia on animals under prescribed regimens.
  • Attends annual Hospital and departmental fire/safety and infection control training and maintains current knowledge of safety procedures within the Hospital and department.
  • Observes all animals to evaluate health status for experiment or diagnostic purposes.
  • Performs and records all quality controls instituted to ensure test validity, i.e., standards in responsible handling, processing, and testing laboratory animals.
  • Provides care, feeding, and watering of primates.
  • Responsible for assisting with the development, implementation and maintenance of the animal care program.
  • Responsible for interacting with investigators regarding the appropriate use of animals in research.
  • Responsible for laboratory procedures such as fecal, urinalysis, blood withdrawals and tissue collecting.
  • Responsible for psychological well-being of non-human primates, i.e., enrichment program.
  • Responsible for sterile surgical services, assisting with pre-op, anesthesia, surgery, and post-op.
  • Responsible for the health and well-being of all laboratory animals. Performs paraveterinary procedures as necessary to maintain the health of laboratory animals. Provides neonatal care to offspring of departmental sub-human primate colony.


  • Program completion of a Veterinary Technology or medical field (emergency medicine, health sciences, etc.) program and one (1) year experience working in a multi-species animal facility required.
