Description

UPMC Hamot is excited to be hiring a flex full-time, Medical Technologist or Medical Lab Technician! This role will be scheduled 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and has rotating weekend and holiday responsibilities. 


Applicants will be placed into the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. Medical Lab Technician salary starts at $15.70/hour. Medical Technologist salary starts at $19.89/hour.


Sign-on bonus is available for candidates meeting the education, licensure, and experience requirements at the Medical Technologist level!


Purpose:

Provide for the accurate performance of routine and STAT laboratory testing. These tests are used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients and in the evaluation of a patient's response to treatment. Apply competent clinical knowledge to achieve accurate clinical testing which leads to quality patient care outcomes. Work in conjunction with and under the supervision of the Medical Technologists.

Responsibilities:
  • Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance and personnel policies.  
  • Enter accurately patient demographic information and laboratory test orders into the laboratory information system, while ascertaining adequacy of patient information as well as sample identity.
  • Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and independent judgment recognizing priorities to accommodate department needs and acceptance of appropriate authority.
  • Interact with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; responds to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Maintain instruments following procedural calibrations, quality control, and daily maintenance and troubleshooting when necessary.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies for those functions for which the position is responsible; uses materials and reagents in a cost-effective manner.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures according to established protocols with precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.  
  • Recognize critical, abnormal and unacceptable test results and follow-up according to established protocols. Inform supervisory personnel and/or pathologists of any unusual or problematic incidents.
  • Train and orient new employees, students and residents, as applicable and as assigned.

Qualifications

Medical Lab Technician
  • Associate degree in a laboratory science or Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) from an accredited institution, 
  • OR Certification from an accredited Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) program, 
  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP preferred, 
  • OR Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA 88 for individuals performing high complexity testing. 
  • Prefer minimum one year experience in a hospital laboratory. 
  • Need to know Medical terminology and laboratory information system.

Medical Technologist


  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program, 
  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP categorical certification, 
  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory, 
  • OR successful completion of the HEW (HHS) proficiency examination, 
  • OR equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA 88 and PA Bureau of Laboratories for technologist performing high complexity testing. 
  • Prefer one year experience in a hospital laboratory. 
  • Know medical terminology and laboratory information system.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT(ASCP)) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred.
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
