The Medical Abstractor will review and abstract clinical data from a variety of medical records (both paper and electronic) utilizing current technology to capture appropriate data.  This role will be supporting the UPMC HealthPlan team Monday through Friday during daylight hours.  The role is based in the State College area and requires travel to surrounding offices.

Responsibilities:
  • Ability to discern correct information from areas of overlap within medical record and Health Plan Departments.
  • Ability to utilize independent judgment and critical thinking is required.
  • Communicate issues relevant regarding paper and electronic records as we well technology issues.
  • Cooperate with other Health Plan Departments functions to ensure charts are processed in a timely manner.
  • Follow the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious events that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
  • Handle inquires appropriately and professionally.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Provide back-up to other scanning staff as appropriate.
  • Requires dependable car and the ability to travel throughout the Health Plan provider network.
  • Review medical record and abstract pertinent documents and data elements. 95% compliance with documents and data elements abstracted.
  • Understand physician practice management, physician terminology and documentation and coding.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. 
  • Six months experience with medical terminology, medical record content, anatomy and physiology required.  
  • Computer/keyboarding skills and working knowledge of office equipment operations required. 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products.  
  • Ability to work independently and maintain confidentiality required.
