Purpose:
The UPMC System Nursing Resources (SNR) Milieu Therapist is a member of a flexible pool of milieu therapists that work per-diem throughout UPMC's inpatient psychiatric business/nursing units performing assigned tasks, and participates as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, in various aspects of patient care with an emphasis on therapeutic activities conducted with assigned individuals and groups.
 
This is a Casual position that will work a minimum of 24 hours in a 6 week period.  This position will be a part of the float pool and travel to Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC) and McKeesport hospital along with other locations based on the needs of the business units.

Responsibilities:
  • Accompany patients to out-of-building activities and appointments
  • Assume day-to-day assignments at a variety of UPMC inpatient psychiatric facilities, congruent with their clinical skills and experience. Establish and maintain positive relationships with managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, nursing colleagues, other departments, as well as patients and families.
  • Attend a minimum of 1 unit based of Institute wide in-service yearly.
  • Coordinate patient groups and activities
  • Demonstrate effective milieu management skills, which promote positive patient experiences.
  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships internally and externally by demonstrating accountability for actions, enthusiasm, motivation and commitment to patients and colleagues
  • Document in the Medical Record according to established policies
  • Encourage or assist patients to perform activities of daily living
  • Facilitate or co-facilitate psychoeducational and therapeutic activity groups effectively
  • Learn and utilize up-to-date technology and practices in delivery of patient care.
  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment.
  • Maintain competency requirements
  • Maintain on-going communication with appropriate staff
  • Manage crisis situations effectively using positive approaches.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary meetings and other activities
  • Perform assigned work in a timely and productive manner
  • Practice solid communication skills, and is able to articulate and translate the patient's condition to other care providers and to negotiate and make recommendations for changes in patient care and unit practices. Patient documentation is comprehensive and promotes communication between caregivers. Provide detailed and appropriate teaching to patients and families to effectively guide them through the duration of their stay as well as transition to another level of care and/or home.
  • Provide clinical interventions assessed by client needs

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mental Health or related field from an accredited college or University is required.
  • Previous psychiatric experience preferred.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Relevant group/individuals experience with therapeutic and leisure oriented activities is strongly preferred.
  • Must be physically capable of providing direct total physical care to unpredictable, potentially violent mentally ill patients as necessary, including lifting, supporting, running towards or away from areas where problems are occurring and pushing and pulling equipment such as wheel chairs.
  • May in the course of their job duties be in rooms where medications are stored. No contact with medications is allowed. In the course of duties may be asked to distribute medications to the nurse at the bedside. Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.

  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Older Adult Protective Services Act
