To perform a variety of duties in and around hospital buildings and grounds. This involves minor repairs, alterations and improvements to buildings and equipment. To inspect and insure proper maintenance of hospital equipment and motor vehicles. To assist craftsmen and other workers as needed in completing their assigned tasks.

  • Assist with repairs on nurse calls and other Bio-Medical equipment or alarms as directed by the Bio-Medial Technicians on the off shifts and weekends and holidays.
  • Determine priorities of inspections or repairs based on previous shift reports; makes inspections on equipment; issues work orders for major repairs and documents all completed preventive work orders; makes routine adjustments and repairs, lubricates and changes filters on all hospital equipment, when necessary. Periodically accompanies and assists the inspectors during their inspection.
  • May be a rotating worker, wherever needed assigned to a specific activity.
  • Performs maintenance checks as directed on all equipment and makes adjustments as required for proper operations.  
  • May be assigned to any one of the following areas for the purpose of training; Renovation Specialist, Machinist, Plumber, Carpenter, Painter, Electrician, HVAC Mechanic.
  • May be required to carry a pager as deemed necessary by management.
  • Must be able to rotate all shifts, weekends and holiday work schedules to provide general maintenance to entire hospital campus.
  • Perform a variety of minor repairs in electrical, plumbing, carpentry and/or HVAC trades throughout the hospital and grounds being conscious of safety hazards and cost containment efforts.
  • Prepare daily time sheets as well as various written reports as requested.
  • Responsible for removal of any supplies and equipment from work area. Responsible for maintaining work areas and assigned job sights clean and orderly and free from hazards.
  • Responsible for familiarization with shop practices, operation and use of equipment, hand and power tools, and materials. 
  • Knowledge of all department safety rules. Complies with all regulations imposed by hospital, State and local authorities.
  • Responsible for proper maintenance of water treatment to all open and closed loops; tests for chemical balances and adds chemicals when necessary. Reads utility meters and checks against company readings to insure against any discrepancies.
  • Responsible for the proper cleaning of the interior and the exterior of all hospital motor vehicles. Make road tests and assures that all vehicles are in safe operating condition.
  • Responsible for the proper maintenance inspection of all hospital motor vehicles.
  • Transport materials and tools by hand or dolly and performs routine tasks as directed by immediate supervisor; with experience and training, perform progressively more complex tasks.


  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Trade or vocational school graduate preferred. 
  • Must have educational courses in blueprint reading OR two years minimum experience using blueprints.  
  • Two years work experience in general building maintenance required.
  • H.V.A.C., plumbing, electrical, carpentry and fire alarm systems maintenance experience in commercial buildings preferred. 
  • Must be self-motivated, good decision maker and able to deal with multiple priorities in certain emergency conditions.  
  • Ability to read blueprints, shop drawing and operating instructions on equipment required. 
  • Licensed personnel strongly preferred.  
  • Ability to move about throughout the hospital facility's buildings, roofs, tunnels and confined spaces.  
  • Ability to move, position and work on equipment of varying sizes and weights.  
  • Must possess the ability and knowledge to operate and maintain power equipment/tools, both stationary and portable, pertaining to the maintenance field.  
  • Ability to move, transport, and work with standard stationary engineer and plumbing equipment and tools.  
  • Must be able to perform all forms of appropriate maintenance work or repairs on various forms of ladders, scaffolds, man lifts and safety equipment in order to complete work assignments at extreme heights.  
  • May in the course of their duties be in rooms where medications are stored. No contact with medications is allowed.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Stationary Engineers License (City of Pittsburgh) Preferred.
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
