Purpose:
Supervise assigned laboratories/departments through managing, planning, servicing, organizing and controlling the activities of personnel engaged in the collection and transport of patient specimens, the processing and handling of laboratory specimens and in the generation of timely and accurate test results. All activities are directed in accordance with the express standards of accrediting agencies, the Director and the UPMC Health System. The Supervisor has direct accountability to the Director of Laboratories for all administrative matters and to the Directors for technical matters. Implied accountability to patients and the medical staff servicing those patients also exist. Use a wide range of independent judgment and discretion in order to coordinate the efforts of the particular laboratory/department for the maximum benefit of patients served.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop annual capital and operating budgets and manage all budgets in accordance with established budgetary guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with the UPMC philosophy and mission of service excellence.
  • Establish appropriate monitoring and control systems and policies/procedures to ensure the laboratories are achieving strategic goals.
  • Promote positive interdisciplinary relations and ensure ongoing problem solving to ensure quality patient care services.
  • Pursue a program of self-development.
  • Receive and investigate all complaints concerning the laboratories and its personnel and takes action when necessary.
  • Remain abreast of developments in the field of management and laboratory science.

 

Qualifications

B.S. degree in Medical Technology from an accredited college/university and successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program; Or a B.S. degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science; and successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program; ASCP or equivalent Medical Technology certification Minimum of 5 years applicable laboratory experience. Current license issued from state in which laboratory is located, if such licensing is required Presents a professional or appropriate image in appearance, articulation and behavior. Demonstrated flexibility in response to unexpected changes in workload, emergencies, staffing and schedule changes. Communicates effectively with patients, physicians and hospital personnel using patience, tact and professionalism.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
ASCP or equivalent Medical Technology certification

  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
  • American Society for Clinical Pathology
