Purpose:
Under the direction of the DEC Clinical Administrator and Clinical Coordinator, the Evaluator Clinician (Casual) is responsible for completing full spectrum diagnostic evaluations, managing the milieu in the DEC, reporting any and all changes in patient behavior, transporting patients and families to the inpatient units or other destinations under the direction of the Clinical Administrator and Clinical Coordinator.

This is a casual position with a set rate of $20.60/hour.

Responsibilities:
  • CARE DELIVERY Completes patient/family assessments referred to emergency services for presentation to the attending/resident psychiatrist Meets standards for documentation and completes all required paperwork, including PEF, commitment paperwork.  Demonstrates ability to utilize DSMIV and to develop provisional diagnosis.  Demonstrates knowledge of mental health laws; obtains appropriate consents or commitment authorizations as needed.  Demonstrates ability to work efficiently and independently in emergency setting.  Demonstrates knowledge of insurance programs, processes and able to obtain authorizations as needed.  Manages crisis situations effectively using positive approaches;assists in maintaining safe environment.  May be responsible to accept, store and transport patient personal belongings including medications as per UPMC Policy.
  • COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE Participates in interdisciplinary activities such as staff meetings and other committees as assigned.  Demonstrates knowledge of inclusion criteria/protocols for current research programs.
  • LEADERSHIP Participates with unit management in Program Development and Performance Improvement Activities.  Completes assigned projects, reports and statistics in a timely manner.
  • PROFESSIONAL GROWTH Maintains competency requirements.  Attends 10 unit based or institute wide inservices yearly.  Serves as mentor to students and new employees.  Learns and utilizes up-to-date technology in delivery of patient care.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Services or a related field with a minimum of three (3) years in a clinical psychiatric setting required.
OR 
  • Entry level Master's degree required. 
  • Experience in a supervisory/charge position preferred.  
  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively, using good clinical judgment to both psychiatric and medical emergencies.  
  • Ability to identify problems, implement resolution, reassesses situation/problem.  
  • Excellent interpersonal relations with the ability to interact in a direct, professional, tactful, gracious manner with all professional/non-professional contacts; includes all areas of verbal/non-verbal communication within the contest of direct/non-direct contact; history of excellent interpersonal relations.  
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. 
  • Ability to work under stress, with an unpredictable patient flow, in a sometimes crowded work environment.  
  • A personal disposition that is warm, friendly, caring, kind and hospitable towards patients, colleagues.  
  • Exhibit openness and willingness to learn.  
  • Flexible schedule; rotating shifts.  
  • History/track record of all above services consistently delivered with a service excellent attitude. 
  • Ability and willingness to work in a managed care environment. 
  • Excellent ability and history of direct, gracious, courteous, kind face-to-face, telephone and nonverbal skills. 
  • May in the course of their job duties be in rooms where medications are stored. No contact with medications is allowed. In the course of duties may be asked to distribute medications to the nurse at the bedside. Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Act 31 Clearance
  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Comprehensive Crisis Management - CCM training is required within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter
