Perform technical and specialized work involved in the administration of retirement, health and welfare benefits via the PeopleSoft Human Resource Information System. Interpret and ensure compliance with laws, contractual arrangements and corporate policy.


  • Assist in the development, design and communication of benefit procedures and programs. To include working with management to implement and conduct open enrollment program, as well as, special enrollment programs related to retirement, health and welfare, COBRA, and voluntary benefits as assigned.
  • Assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of the company's benefits programs via PeopleSoft, the Human Resource Information System. Perform tasks related to administrative benefit programs such as medical dental, (IRS Section 125), COBRA, FMLA, disability, life insurance, retirement and other associated benefits as assigned.
  • Conduct and maintain the new staff orientation on benefit programs, as well as, developing training for new programs for other benefit team members as assigned.
  • Establish processes that are efficient and effective in delivering quality service to staff members. Assist with the implementation of design and administrative changes for retirement and health and welfare plans.
  • Interact with and advise current and former employees via Employee Service Center on a range of benefit questions and concerns. Assist with the implementation and on-going maintenance of employee self-service systems, such as My HUB, Voluntary and Retirement.
  • Interface with external broker and vendors on improvement and/or addition of benefit plans, general benefit administration matters and issue resolution.
  • Oversee and administer ERISA reporting requirements for UPMC benefit programs, including form 5500 and/or other compliance forms and matters, such as, the administration of domestic relations orders.
  • Oversee the administration, coordination with ESC, HRIS, external vendors, etc. as needed for specific benefit programs as assigned. Could include administration of retirement calculations, COBRA administration, health care eligibility coordination, legacy retiree benefits, student verifications, eligibility oversight, etc.
  • Process and pay monthly/quarterly benefit invoices as assigned. Coordinate with TPA/Accounting/Payroll to ensure premiums and employee contributions are paid are accurate and timely.
  • Take part in major projects in the benefits area to redesign current programs, processes, and recommendations of new programs. Make revisions to programs currently being used to ensure program compliance with legal requirements.
  • Utilize PeopleSoft to generate management reports related to benefit deductions, eligibility, enrollments, confirmations, event maintenance, plan statistics, etc. Apply knowledge of system when researching and correcting system errors.


  • B.S. degree in Business or Human Resources.
  • Two to three years of employee benefits/retirement experience.
  • Additional benefit related work experience could substitute for Education.
  • Thorough knowledge of computerized Human Resource Information Systems, specifically PeopleSoft, HEAT, COBRA system and tuition database. 
  • Ability to research and resolve system and data related errors. 
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of in-depth employee benefits principals, practices, procedures and documentation as applicable. 
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of laws pertaining to employee health & welfare and retiree benefits, COBRA and IRS Section 125. 
  • Ability to interpret, verify and process documentation related to: dependent verification, family and employment status change, adoption, domestic partner, tuition assistance and defined benefit and defined contribution. 
  • Ability to accurately process and communicate benefit rates or plan design changes.
  • In-depth knowledge and assistance with annual enrollment processes.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
    Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) preferred.

Salary Range: $24.27 to $41.99 / hour
