Develops, implements and evaluates a quality therapeutic and recreational activity program to provide opportunity for stimulation in the physical, cognitive, social, emotional and leisure domains for physical, mental and emotional stimulation, including socialization opportunities for residents.


  • Accept responsibility and accountability for assigned workload; act as a manager, leader and role model in the Activities Department; focus entire department on quality.
  • Assist activity aides as needed.
  • Assist with feeding residents as requested.
  • Attend training, meetings and in-services as required.
  • Collects documents and tracks meal ticket purchase and communicates the information to other departments as necessary.
  • Complete and maintain all required documentation for activities including progress notes which include attendance of each resident and their level of activity; complete, maintain, and sign off on all required documentation.
  • Conduct/coordinate Resident Council Meetings in cooperation with Social Services.
  • Coordinate transportation needs, including driving vehicles and accompanying residents outside of facility.
  • Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the department.
  • Demonstrate a thorough working knowledge of and maintains strict adherence to current federal, state and local regulations and internal policies and procedures as they pertain to the Activities Department; remain informed on current trends (i.e. Eden Alternative).
  • Encourage residents to participate in recreational and spiritual activities and become involved in various events; encourage staff to participate and support activities of residents.
  • Evaluate quality and appropriateness of activity programs, networking with medical and nursing staff and other internal departments to develop new and needed activities.
  • Exhibit leadership by example in areas of attitude, attendance, hospitality and a sincere interest in quality; treats coworkers, staff and residents with dignity and respect; represents the facility in a professional manner.
  • Follow the chain of command guidelines for inter-facility problem solving.
  • Identifies and reports all unsafe/hazardous conditions, equipment, and incidents/accidents immediately.
  • Identify and develops sources of community involvement for residents.
  • Identify resident's activity needs and interests, establishes interventions based upon resident activity assessment and family interviews, evaluate effectiveness of interventions on an ongoing basis, setting goals to maximize potential life satisfaction.
  • Is alert for any change in condition of a resident; reports changes to Charge Nurse or House Manager immediately.
  • Keep Administrator apprised of any concerns or problems within the Activity Department.
  • Know role in disaster and fire plan.
  • Maintain confidentiality in regards to resident and employee information and records.
  • Observe and follow appropriate procedures concerning the facility's corporate compliance program.
  • Participate as an active member of the Interdisciplinary Team.
  • Participate in resident assessments and discharge planning as requested.
  • Plan and implement a monthly calendar of meaningful activities, appropriate to the needs and interests of each resident, including entertainment, intercommunication, exercise, relaxation, opportunity to express creative talents and fulfill basic psychological, social and spiritual needs.
  • Recommend to the Administrator the equipment and supply needs of the department.
  • Supervise activity staff and handles personnel related matters, including performance evaluations, staff counseling and scheduling.
  • Work with Volunteer Coordinator in obtaining volunteers.


2-4 years experience in social/recreational programs, preferably in nursing home or geriatric setting, and one year in management/supervisor position; or any acceptable combination of training and/or experience. Must possess effective communication and interpersonal skills; excellent organizational, problem solving and leadership skills. Must possess considerable knowledge of and ability to develop and implement therapeutic activities for the elderly and handicapped population. Must possess a working knowledge of current federal, state and local regulations and the ability to assure compliance to same within the Activity Department.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist  Certification through National Council for Ther. Rec. Certification.
