Provides direction, coaches, teaches and precepts other employees to ensure optimal team performance during a shift. Perform advanced level assessment of the patient's condition, determine appropriate course of treatment and administer basic and advanced life support to patients at the scene, en route to the hospital and in a pre-hospital setting in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations and standards. Function in complex emergency situations, most often as a single advanced life support provider.


  • Administer drugs, orally or by injection, or perform intravenous procedures under a physician's direction.
  • Assess and evaluate patients exposed to or contaminated with a hazardous substance and provide appropriate patient care, following protocols and department policies.
  • Assess the nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures. Administer basic and advanced life support to patients at the scene, en route to the hospital or inter-facility transports and in a pre-hospital setting in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations and standards. In the absence of medical command access use knowledge, skill, experience and judgment for initiating patient care.
  • Assume responsibility for personal development and education.
  • Commit to high quality, safe work; encourage others to have similar standards. Identify processes/systems that could lead to inefficient practices, unsafe conditions, errors or adverse events. Avoid shortcuts to ensure quality and safety measures are not circumvented. Encourage patient and family involvement in processes involving patient safety. Understand that patient safety is everyone's responsibility. Assume responsibility for personal education and performance related to patient safety; report unsafe conditions or events immediately; speak up in a non confrontational and educational manner when seeing a safety breech; develop or participate in a project or action plan to reduce risk or mitigate harm for patients, as appropriate.
  • Communicate with Medical Command personnel to provide information about situation, to arrange reception of victims, to provide patients' vital statistics and medical history, or to receive instructions for further treatment.
  • Ensures efficiency and effectiveness of the operation while actively present; makes recommendations to management for improving processes or work flow, improving customer service that leads to increased quality, or improving the efficiency of the work.
  • In the absence of Prehospital Field Supervisor, ensures the UPMC Susquehanna Prehospital System is appropriately staffed following predetermined staffing and scheduling guidelines, and system status management is provided with Prehospital units.
  • In the absence of a Prehospital Field Supervisor, provide on-scene direction at incidents while working through the Incident Command System.
  • Know and follow all organizational/departmental policies/procedures.
  • Maintain vehicles and medical and communication equipment and replenish first aid equipment and supplies. Maintain records and checklists as required.
  • Observe, record, and report to physician the patient's condition or injury, the treatment provided, and reactions to drugs or treatment.
  • Perform emergency diagnostic and treatment procedures, such as stomach suction, airway management, or heart monitoring, as well as other advanced level patient care modalities approved by the state for use in the Prehospital environment and in ambulance.
  • Perform proper procedures in a timely and appropriate manner to prevent further harm to the patient using basic and advanced life support equipment and device.
  • Plans and instructs American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support, Advance Cardiac Life Support or Pediatric Advance Life Support classes to support System and departmental needs.
  • Provide educational instruction to student Paramedics on prehospital advanced life support calls and transports in the prehospital setting.
  • Provide public service programs to the community and stand-by assignments at local events.
  • Provides direction, coaches, teaches and precepts other designated UPMC Susquehanna ALS/BLS employees and Student Paramedics to ensure optimal team performance during a shift and within compliance if Pennsylvania Act 45.
  • Provides public service programs to the community. Provide education to local entities to include presentations of Emergency Services Programs or other participation in school, professional or other group requests.


Three years pre-hospital EMS experience at the advanced life support provider level at UPMC Susquehanna or three years of external and one year at UPMC Susquehanna required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Certified Paramedic in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania required.

National Registry as an EMT-Paramedic required within one year of hire.

Valid Driver's License required.

PA Dept of Health recognized Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) or Emerg Vehicle Driver (EVD)
