Provides direct support and performs duties as designated for the safety and efficacy of the patient. Is responsible for the safe operation of the ECMO system as well as various ancillary devices and all non-invasive monitoring and support equipment used by Perfusion Services for ECMO.


  • All other duties as assigned by manager.
  • Also, the use of blood and blood products, as well as lab results, will be monitored closely and reviewed per procedure and at department staff meetings as well as M&M conference.
  • Assist with extracorporeal procedures, routine and emergency, during open-heart procedures and other surgical procedures.
  • Clean and calibrate all equipment. Stock the supply area and custom packs both in the ECMO cart and in the storage room. Complete and submit appropriate related reports.
  • Communicate the effects improper cannulation will have on supporting the ECMO patient as well as the system that should be used.
  • Ensure patient safety through maximizing the care of the patient to be placed on extracorporeal support, both in the OR as well as the ICU's, the Perfusionist/Perfusion technician needs to select the equipment that is appropriate to the needs of each patient i.e. oxygenators, tubing packs etc.
  • Ensure that information is communicated to the family in a sensitive and confidential matter.
  • Recommend to the surgeon the most appropriate cannulae size specific to each patient
  • Remain at the bedside of the ECMO patient(s) at all times with the exception of specific activities that will require his/her attention.
  • Report the condition of the patient as well as the ECMO system to the attending physician and to the Perfusion Technician who will relieve him/her.
  • Responsible for the safe operation of the ECMO system. Assemble, prime, and make adjustments to the system as necessary.
  • Train and support the casual ECMO staff as well as the nursing and medical staff on the effects of bypass on the ECMO patient.


  • Five (5) years of experience (prior to August 10, 2010) or have licensure in PA as a CRNP, RCP, RN, or CCP. 
  •  OR
  • A person who: (i) is trained according to the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation specialist guidelines of the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization; and (ii) operates an extracorporeal membrane oxygenations circuit under the supervisor of a licensed physician.

  • Act 31 Clearance
  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
