Responsible for rendering professional advanced emergency medical care to ill or injured patients in collaboration with a flight nurse partner and medical control. Provides patient focused care within the objectives, policies and procedures of ALSTAR ambulance and STARFLIGHT.

Provides professional emergency care in accordance with New York and Pennsylvania pre-hospital and inter-hospital protocols while in a medically equipped aircraft or ambulance.


  • 1. Demonstrates the ability to assess patient status in all situations using critical thinking skills. Interprets and appropriately utilizes assessment data collected, i.e. physical assessment, interviewing, report from medical team, review of patient history, labs, tests, patient medical record.
  • 10. Documents completely on all forms, in a timely fashion according to policy and procedure
  • 11. Completes and maintains required competencies and demonstrates the knowledge of age specific principles in all care situations.
  • 2. Develops, revises and implements individualized patient care plans utilizing input from team members and medical team with realistic goals based on diagnosis, patient needs and assessment data.
  • 3. Reassess changing needs of patients and adjust plan of care based on this ongoing evaluation
  • 4. Coordinates and prioritizes the plan of care with flight nurse/partner on this ongoing evaluation.
  • 5. Coordinates and prioritizes the plan of care with flight nurse/partner and medical control.
  • 6. Assures the plan of care is implemented, monitoring and evaluating patient responses as well as monitoring and evaluating responsibilities shared with appropriate caregivers.
  • 7. Coordinates and/or provides patient and community education according to Starflight policy
  • 8. Identifies problems related to patient care/treatment plan and takes corrective action.
  • 9. Evaluates patient care outcomes in collaboration with the medical control physician and flight team.
  • Assists with orientation and evaluates proficiency of peers and new staff.
  • Assumes accountability for own scope of practice and clinical outcomes.
  • Attends a minimum of 75% of staff meetings.
  • Collaborates with co-workers for flight program responsibilities.
  • Is a role model and resource person.
  • Locates, operates and cares for routine equipment necessary to function within the flight program: identifies malfunctions, problem-solves and/or notifies appropriate people; utilizes equipment and supplies efficiently, Removes defective equipment as per policy.
  • Pursues issues and participates in the QI process. Participates in other flight activities as requested, i.e. PR flight, community outreach or education programs


  • Must have 3 years ALS experience Ability to render professional basic and advanced emergency care in accordance all New York and Pennsylvania protocols as well as ALSTAR and STARFLIGHT protocols. 
  • Must be able to organize and prioritize patient care in an emergent setting. Must have excellent communication skills, teaching skills, and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be trustworthy and maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Performs all duties/responsibilities of an EMT-P. 
  • Must maintain credentialing skills as outlined in the Standard Operating Guidelines including advanced airway management and any other skills as directed by the medical director. 
  • Must maintain PA certification by following PA continuing education requirements. 
  • Must maintain 9/12 or 75% of monthly crew meetings per year. Attendance at the annual Starflight skills Bootcamp is mandatory, and the date of Bootcamp will be planned one year in advance. Attendance with the bi-annual FAA Safety brief is mandatory, and this date will be provided at least 3 months in advance. 
  • Upon hire, must weight less than 220 pounds in full uniform (flight suit, boots, and helmet). Must maintain a weight of less than 220 pounds to be evaluated bi-annually or as requested by the Director of Operations or Chief Flight Nurse. During employment, if weight exceeds 220 pounds in full uniform, overweight action plan will be instituted and followed. a NOMEX flight suit will be provided as the duty uniform when acting in the flight paramedic role by ground or air. WORK CONTACT GROUP: Paired with a rotating flight nurse and pilot(s). Frequent contact with physicians, EMS/Fire Personnel (paid or volunteer), dispatch, police agencies, aeromedical personnel, MTS Division staff, hospital staff, management staff, patients and families.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
    Must have a current NYSDOH EMT-P card, must have a current PA DOH EMT-P license and medical command, maintain a current CPR card for professionals (AHA or ARC preferred), a current ACLS card, a current ITLS card(or equivalent such as ATCN, TNCC, PHTLS etc) , and a current PALS card. Completion of NALS or NRP will be required within one year and maintained current. Must have EMT-P and NREMT-P is desirable. Either NREMT-P or FPC is required within 2 years of hire date
