The Systemwide Nursing Resources (SNR) team, part of UPMC Corporate Services, is actively seeking Obstetrics trained (OB) RNs interested in joining our nursing team. 

Our full-time RN staff, known as the OB Nursing SWAT team, travels to various UPMC facilities within the Western and Central Pennsylvania areas as needed for 6 week assignments. These nurses work on OB units within a hospital in order to support patient care during leaves of absences, for high census coverage, or to support the units while vacancies are filled. SWAT nurses function as an integral part of the assigned units' team, working a variety of shifts and assignments.

Systemwide Nursing Resources (SNR) SWAT team positions receive full-time benefits as well as increased compensation @ $39.00/hr plus differential and expense reimbursement to reward their flexibility. While on assignments in our many UPMC facilities, our nurses gain rare, impressive, and highly desirable professional experiences and build widely varied skill sets.

The SWAT RN-OB Nurse has the authority, responsibility, and shift accountability for the delivery of OB nursing care through the use of the nursing process. In collaboration with the Nursing leaders and other health care professionals, these RNs apply competent clinical knowledge and skills to achieve quality care outcomes. 

The SWAT RN-OB Nurse will be utilized to fill shifts in all OB units of high need throughout the UPMC system. Nurses must be willing to work at all UPMC facilities that offer delivery services which include but are not limited to: UPMC Magee-Women's Hospital, UPMC Mercy, UPMC Northwest, UPMC Hamot, UPMC Horizon, and UPMC Altoona. SWAT OB Nurses must be willing to work and accept regular rotational assignments as determined by a SWAT team supervisor.

Nurses on this team must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care that is relevant to patients under their care, as well as apply principles of growth and development over the life span. They also must possess the ability to assess and interpret patient data needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age specific needs.


• Comply with established medication use policies. Respond to emergent situations and initiates appropriate actions. Coordinate, provide, and evaluate patient/family education. Strictly adhere to all policies and practices relative to patient care and hospital related information. Comply with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions. Ensure equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department, i.e. Maintenance or Biomedical Engineering. Document in the medical record according to established procedures. Perform work in a timely and productive manner.

• Constructively receive feedback and direction Identify and communicates learning needs to appropriate manager. Serve as a resource for staff and other disciplines. Take action to improve knowledge, skills and performance based on feedback or on self-identified developmental needs. Prior to performing new or challenging skills, requests assistance and reviews relevant policies and procedures.

• Establish appropriate, assertive and professional communication strategies. Strengthen interdisciplinary relationships with members of the health care team. Communicate patient's condition to physician and other key members of the health care team. Seek out appropriate nursing, physician or other health care team intervention. Coordinate interdepartmental activities to expedite care. Contribute to the universal unit activities, including but not limited to responding to call lights and telephone, passing meal trays and patient transports. Participate in quality improvement activities.

• Function independently with one day orientation, unless otherwise specified. Maintain critical thinking skills, analytical and problem solving abilities as related to various aspects of patient care. Cultivate professional relationships and communication in the clinical environment. Prior training of a minimal of 3 years in nursing and one year of OB-Nursing and will communicate any educational needs when necessary. Maintain contact availability for schedule changes when needed. Must be flexible in scheduling to the requirements of the unit assigned.

• Maintain critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and lead others in application of nursing.

• Utilize nursing process in managing the care of patients including assessment, interdisciplinary planning, implementation, evaluation of patient care, teaching and discharge planning. Assume responsibility for complex assignments and views problems as challenges. Provide basic psychosocial support and counseling. Maintain standards of nursing care and utilizes standards as a guide for practice. Collaborate with physician and care team to ensure quality patient care. Report and record all changes observed in condition or behavior of patients.


  • Demonstrated competence in professional nursing practice. 
  •  2 years nursing experience with 1 year in OB labor and delivery experience required.
  • Must be able to pass all UPMC required testing for Registered Nurses. 
  • Annual competencies at Magee Womens Hospital of UPMC required
  • CPR, ALS, EMF required

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
