A Chief Medical Physicist position is immediately available for an experienced medical physicist at the UPMC Susquehanna Cancer Center located at 1100 Grampian Blvd, Williamsport, PA.  The successful candidate will provide leadership to the Physics Section consisting of one physicist in addition to the Chief Physicist and two dosimetrists in this progressive, technologically advanced Cancer Center. The Chief Medical Physicist will oversee all the operations of clinical medical physics services that are provided at the center.  This person will conduct all aspects of the radiation therapy physics consistent with the mission and goals of the center, including clinical medical physics support, equipment calibration and commissioning, maintaining of appropriate quality assurance for equipment and treatment delivery, compliance with radiation safety, licensing issues and other pertinent regulatory requirements. The department uses the following techniques: IMRT, IGRT, SRS, SBRT with CBCT/OBI, 4D CT and organ motion management. The successful candidate will have demonstrated clinical skills in these areas. This position is also the RSO for the Linear Accelerator program.

Facility and Equipment


UPMC Susquehanna Cancer Center is a community cancer center in North-Central Pennsylvania. The center is a part of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center network consisting of 26 cancer centers located in Pennsylvania and New York area. UPMC Susquehanna Cancer Center has the following equipment:  Varian Linacs-  EDGE (New), Trilogy, Varisource HDR, and GE Lightspeed CTsimulator. Software to include: Aria-EMR, Eclipse-Planning, Rad Calc and RPM motion management system.  

Oversees the work of the Dosimetrist and Medical Physicist. Works with the Physician and guides the physics staff in implementing clinical goals. Develops and directs the Quality Control programs for equipment and procedures and ensures appropriate staff are trained on this program, making sure the equipment works properly by taking precise measurements of the radiation beam, performing clinical physics duties of maintaining Commonwealth regulatory compliance and calibrating all radiation therapy equipment.

  • Facilitates the Dosimetry Quality improvement meeting with fellow physicist and dosimetrist.
  • Facilitates the quarterly Quality Assurance meeting; reviews daily QA CT, Linac, HDR, instrument calibration and sets physics goals.
  • Know and follow all organizational/departmental policies/procedures.
  • Performs Linear Accelerator Audit with department manager; reviews policy and procedures, state regulations, licenses, linac QA results, instrument calibration, therapists and dosimetrists education.
  • Performs daily physics check, clinical supervision of Stereotactic/HDR/4DCT and other procedures as needed, physics consolation, clinical treatment planning of Stereotactic and Brachytherapy, clinical treatment QA and periodic machine QA.
  • Performs materials license audit (HDR brachytherapy) with department manager; reviews policy and procedures, state regulations, licenses, linac QA results, instrument calibration, therapists and dosimetrists annual education.
  • Performs monthly dosimetry badge review, annual HDR chart review, attends radiation safety meetings and provides guidance to staff.
  • Renews the Linear Accelerator and Materials State license. Ensures all policy and procedures and practices meet the state DEP regulations.
  • Serves as the Radiation Safety Officer of the Linear Accelerator Program and member of the Radiation Safety committee.
  • Works with the department manager in the review of the purchase of new capital equipment and software. Reviews quotes and SSA contracts of new and existing equipment/software as needed. Guides the department in the capital needs for the next five years.



A physical science or engineering degree required, medical physics is preferred. Masters required Ten years experience as a Medical Physicists in a Radiation Oncology department required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
American Board of Radiology (ABR) in Therapeutic Radiologic Physics orequivalent Required AAPM (American Association of Physicists in Medicine) Required ABR Board eligible considered.

  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
