Purpose:
Our Corporate Legal Department is searching for an Assistant Counsel to focus on healthcare provider employment and professional services agreements.  In this role, you would have the opportunity to operate independently while having support from an overall team.  If you have a legal background and exposure to provider-side healthcare, this could be the opportunity for you.

Responsibilities:
  • Apply general legal knowledge in the following areas, among others: employment and professional services contracting, commercial and corporate law, and specialized legal knowledge in one or more of such areas.
  • Provide guidance with respect to contractual arrangements and prepare contractual and other legal documentation.
  • Assist senior UPMC attorneys and/or outside counsel in either highly complex litigation or highly complex business transactions.
  • Apply legal knowledge, analysis and judgment to identify alternative approaches and their relative merits and recommend solutions to legal problems, including daily issues as well as more complex issues.
  • Provide legal counsel and legal services to UPMC corporate and business units in moderately complex business arrangements: Represent UPMC business units in legal proceeding of moderate complexity or: Monitor outside counsel with respect to moderately complex business arrangements or litigation.
  • Perform special project assignments for the Vice President, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer.
  • Provide counsel to managers and staff throughout UPMC and address and resolve legal issues as they arise on a daily basis, such as in the areas of regulatory and patient care law. Conduct legal research and perform legal analysis.
  • Review and recommend changes to corporate policy to ensure compliance with legal requirements.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Provider-side healthcare law experience, including employment contracting experience, is strongly preferred.
  • Healthcare law and regulatory law experience is strongly preferred.
  • Employment and professional services contracting experience is preferred.
  • Employment law experience is preferred.

 

Qualifications

  • J.D. Degree required.
  • Minimum five years experience as a practicing attorney, including significant experience in health law or another relevant specialty, such as employment law or litigation.
  • Pennsylvania license or obtain such license within six (6) months of date-of-hire required.
  • Must demonstrate ability to independently handle unique, sensitive and complex legal matters, on time sensitive basis, with limited direct supervision.
  • Must demonstrate strong legal analytical skills, communication skills, solid legal writing skills and problem solving and conflict resolution skills.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
    • Pennsylvania Attorneys License
