UPMC Health Plan is hiring a full-time Health Coach Specialist to help support the Health Management Department for its downtown Pittsburgh location at the US Steel Tower. This is a Monday through Friday daylight position with occasional evenings and Saturdays shifts.

The successful candidate will function as a Health Coach within the UPMC Health Plan's Medical Management Team to provide telephonic and in-person health behavior change support to members of the Health Plan.


  • Accurately document member contacts in a timely fashion.
  • Assess members' readiness to address the targeted risk factor(s).
  • Competently employ motivational strategies for encouraging individuals to explore motivation for change and enhance readiness.
  • Define health behaviors or concerns that would potentially improve health if targeted for change.
  • Develop and maintain awareness of and competence in the use of behavior modification skills.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of UPMC and community health resources.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of interventions for obesity, smoking, diabetes, improving compliance to medication and/or medical regimens, and others as indicated.
  • Engage members who have specified risk factors in the collaborative development of a personalized behavior change plan to address the risk factor(s) in conjunction with their primary care physicians, if appropriate.
  • Engage with members in regular contacts over time to assist them in implementing the change plan, tracking progress, and maintaining changes over time.
  • Provide timely feedback to primary care physicians about members' progress toward health behavior goals.
  • Review health risk assessment and health screening results with members over the phone..
  • Track member progress toward defined goals.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Health Management Team.
  • Work with other members of the Health Plan Health Management Team to review member health information and triage members to the appropriate health intervention



  • Bachelors degree in psychology, health education, nutrition, exercise physiology, counseling, social work, public health or a related field required.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn a client-centered counseling approach that emphasizes nonjudgmental empathic interaction and collaborative development and implementation of behavior change plans.
  • Non-smoker.
  • Prior Health Coaching experience is highly preferred
  • A Registered Dietitian is also preferred.
  • Detail-oriented individual with excellent organizational skills.
  • High level of oral communication skills.
  • Intermediate proficiency with MS Word and Outlook.
  • Ability to learn new computer-based documentation skills.

Salary Range: $22.60 to $39.11 / hour
