Responsible for rendering professional advanced emergency medical care to ill or injured patients in collaboration with a flight nurse or flight paramedic partner and medical control. Provides patient focused care within the objectives, policies, and procedures of ALSTAR ambulance and STARFLIGHT. Provides professional emergency care in accordance with New York and Pennsylvania pre-hospital and inter-hospital protocols while in a medically equipped aircraft or ambulance. Maintains all standards of nursing care. Active involvement with Quality Improvement initiatives. Uses an understanding of the principle of growth and development to assess each patient's age specific needs and provide age specific treatment and care.


This position is located in Jamestown, NY.


  • Assists with orientation and evaluates proficiency of peers and new staff.
  • Assumes accountability for own scope of practice and clinical outcomes.
  • Assures that the plan of care is implemented, monitoring and evaluating patient responses as well as monitoring and evaluating responsibilities shared with appropriate caregivers.
  • Attends a minimum of 75% of staff meetings.
  • Collaborates with co-workers for flight program responsibilities.
  • Completes and maintains required competencies and demonstrates the knowledge of age specific principles in all care situations.
  • Coordinates and prioritizes the plan of care with flight medic/partner and medical control.
  • Coordinates and/or provides patient and community education according to Starflight policy.
  • Demonstrates the ability to assess patient status in all situations using critical thinking skills. Interprets and appropriately utilizes assessment data collected, i.e. physical assessment, interviewing, report from medical team, review of patient history, labs, tests, patient medical record.
  • Develops, revises and implements individualized patient care plans utilizing input from team members and medical team with realistic goals based on diagnosis, patient needs and assessment data.
  • Documents on all forms according to policy and procedure, i.e. Flight orders and PCR etc.
  • Evaluates patient care outcomes in collaboration with the medical control physician and flight team.
  • Identifies problems related to patient care/treatment plan and takes corrective action.
  • Is a role model and resource person for flight team and ALSTAR EMS
  • Locates, operates and cares for routine equipment necessary to function within the flight program: identifies malfunctions, problem-solves and/or notifies appropriate people; utilizes equipment and supplies efficiently. Removes defective equipment as per policy.
  • Provides competent, safe, therapeutic care based on New York and Pennsylvania pre-hospital protocols, WREMAC ALS and Starflight protocols.
  • Pursues issues and participates in the QI process. Participates in other flight activities as requested, i.e. PR flight, community outreach or education programs.
  • Reassess changing needs of patients and adjusts plan of care based on this ongoing evaluation.



  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. 
  • BSN is preferred. 
  • Minimum of three years of nursing experience in an emergency department or intensive care unit setting. 
  • Must complete ICS 100, 200.b, NIMS 700, Hazmat Awareness, & NYS Mandated Reported trainings within 6 months of hire. 
  • Work Contact Group: Paired with a rotating flight nurse or flight paramedic and pilot(s). Frequent contact with physicians, EMS/Fire Personnel (paid or volunteer), dispatch, police agencies, aeromedical personnel, MTS Division staff, hospital staff, management staff, patients and families.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
    New York State and Pennsylvania licensure and current registration of nursing license required. Must have a current NYSDOH EMT certification - Paramedic is preferred. Must have, or be able to obtain a current PA DOH PHRN certification and medical command. Must maintain a current CPR certification for professionals (AHA or ARC preferred), a current ACLS certification, current ITLS certification or equivalent (such as ATCN, TNCC, PHTLS), and a current PALS certification. Completion of NRP/NALS will be required within one year and will be maintained as a current certification from then on. CEN, CFRN, CCRN is preferred. Must obtain and maintain CFRN certification within one year of hire date.
