Description

UPMC has an exciting opportunity for a Visual Designer I in its Consumer Innovation department, located in downtown Pittsburgh at the Heinz 57 Center.

 

The Visual Designer is a problem solver and enjoys the challenge of translating big ideas into adaptable designs across desktop, tablet and mobile platforms. The Visual Designer will create designs that fit into the overall vision of the site, while also using creativity to push the boundaries of Consumer Innovation. This position will split time between two types of work: crafting graphics for executive-level presentations that support understanding and decision-making of complex concepts, and collaborating with our human-centered design teams to create superior experiences for health care consumers.

Responsibilities:

  • Apply frameworks and guiding principles informed by research to the design process in order to achieve the most appropriate solution.
  • Design and Creativity: Demonstrate a body of work that showcases concepts, prototypes, and final deliverables informed by user insights.
  • Exhibit exceptional understanding of human-centered design best practices, standards, and user interface design. 
  • Identify opportunities for design innovation in healthcare through visual design informed by user research, testing, and an overall human-centered approach.
  • Design and Creativity: Design and develop various prototypes, wireframes, and storyboards to support the visual design process.
  • Create visual tools informed by research, such as personas, journey maps, service blueprints, importance/difficulty matrix, etc., to inform the overall design process.
  • Design and facilitate workshops and other activities to identify business goals, establish priorities, align needs, generate ideas, present findings.
  • Effectively communicate research findings and present design recommendations by demonstrating superior oral and visual communication abilities.
  • Facilitation and Communication: Ability to design and facilitate a group process, elicit contributions from group members, stimulate a focused group discussion, and achieve a desired outcome.
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas in an easy to digest format utilizing a variety of media and effective storytelling.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with other researchers, designers and business and technology stakeholders on multiple projects.
  • Process Management and Lifecycle: Ability to prioritize amid demands and time constraints while meeting deadlines and schedules as required to develop and bring products into marketplace.
  • Proven track record of taking high-profile projects from concept to completion, aligning stakeholders, clients and contributors.
  • Research and Analytics: Proficient in the creation and synthesis of several of the following: surveys, interviews, participation activities, analytics reporting, digital user testing, etc.
  • Demonstrate user research knowledge and human centered design skills to validate design concepts and test visual prototypes.


 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in design-focused program such as graphic design, architecture, industrial design, communication design from an accredited college or university (comparable degree, Associate's degree, and/or experience will be considered, including internships).
  • Experience in visual design using a range of media such as video, audio, animations, illustrations, and prototyping software for storytelling and consumer product design.
  • Experience in translating complex ideas and insights into easily understood visual experiences across a variety of situations, including, but not limited to, consumer product prototypes, executive-level presentation visuals, infographics, etc.
  • Experience with digital product development with proven ability to translate business and user problems into solid solutions (preferred).
  • Working knowledge of design tools, including, but not limited to, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Axure, UserTesting.com, Optimal Workshop, or equivalent software.
