UPMC has an exciting opportunity for a Design Researcher, Senior in its Consumer Innovation department located in downtown Pittsburgh at the Heinz 57 Center.


The Design Researcher, Senior will span evaluating experiences for consumers, working on designs that span devices, screen sizes and platforms, and envisioning creative UX solutions for a large base of exciting users.


  • Business Acumen: Knowledge of related technologies, techniques and business practices.
  • Plan and facilitate hands-on tool evaluations, team workshops, and analysis sessions. These participatory co-creation sessions result in a common ground of familiarity with a tool and its use, while inspiring creativity and collaboration within your team.
  • Design and Creativity: Demonstrate a body of work that showcases concepts, prototypes, and final deliverables informed by user insights.
  • Exhibit exceptional understanding of human-centered design best practices, standards, and user interface design. 
  • Design and facilitate workshops and other activities to identify business goals, establish priorities, align needs, generate ideas, present findings, etc.
  • Analyze and synthesize research findings into key insights that inform opportunities for new feature sets, functionalities and business approaches.
  • Facilitation and Communication: Ability to design and facilitate a group process, elicit contributions from group members, stimulate a focused group discussion, and achieve a desired outcome.
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas in an easy to digest format utilizing a variety of media and effective storytelling.
  • Analyze and synthesize research findings into key insights that inform opportunities for new feature sets, functionalities and business approaches. 
  • Effectively communicate research findings and present design recommendations by demonstrating superior oral and visual communication abilities.
  • Present research findings in an engaging and concise manner to key stakeholders across the business.
  • You will need to communicate through well-crafted presentations that educate and inspire your team through photos, video, diagrams, storytelling and demonstrations.
  • Process Management and Lifecycle: Ability to prioritize amid demands and time constraints while meeting deadlines and schedules as required to develop and bring products into marketplace.
  • Proven track record of taking high-profile projects from concept to completion, aligning stakeholders, clients and contributors.
  • Create tools informed by research, such as personas, journey maps, service blueprints, importance/difficulty matrix, etc., to inform the overall design process.
  • Create strong frameworks and guiding principles from research for the design team and business stakeholder to utilize throughout the project to design the most appropriate solution.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with other researchers, designers and business and technology stakeholders on multiple projects.
  • Research and Analytics: Demonstrate a strong design-led and human-centered approach to research.
  • Proficient in the creation and synthesis of several of the following: surveys, interviews, participation activities, analytics reporting, digital user testing, etc.
  • Design and conduct multi-faceted research plans to learn about all aspects of the construction trade.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of quantitative research methods in order to design and analyze surveys. 
  • Determine appropriate research synthesis and coding methods for individual studies as well as across multiple studies to most effectively identify insights and patterns.



  • Bachelor's degree in design, communication, anthropology, psychology, sociology, business or related discipline from an accredited college or university (or comparable degree and/or experience. Master's Degree preferred.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of experience in a consumer product design, service design, product development or related role is required.
  • Experience in the health care or insurance industries a plus.
  • Experience applying qualitative research in a professional environment is required. Related educational experience including internship/externship will be considered.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to scope a research process, lead fieldwork, conduct interviews and perform desk research.
  • Experience in synthesizing research findings and uncovering and articulating insights to inform design.
  • Experience with digital product development experience with proven ability to translate business and user problems into solid solutions is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of design tools including but not limited to Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Axure,, Optimal Workshop, or equivalent software

Salary Range: $34.96 to $59.20 / hour
