The current position is part of a large, longitudinal research study, the Pittsburgh girls study (PGS). In this study, a sample of 2,450 girls from the city of Pittsburgh has been followed for 18 years to track developmental change and contexts of influence. In 2017, a new substudy (PGS-echo) began which follows PGS participants who become pregnant to examine contexts and biomarkers of pregnancy and child health.

The lab supervisor will oversee the collection, processing, storage, shipping and tracking of biospecimens (e.g. blood, urine, nails) from participant women and children. Some samples will be shipped to a central repository, others will be stored on-site. The employee will provide supervision to phlebotomists and lab staff.

This position is grant funded.

Responsible for managing the laboratory division within laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, and guidelines and according to applicable authority levels, laws and regulations.

  • Designs, conducts and/or arranges for on-the-job training and in-service education and information programs for various hospital personnel.
  • Develops and maintains an organizational plan for the laboratory.
  • Ensures that the laboratory meets applicable department, hospital and regulatory safety and fire requirements.
  • Ensures the operational efficiency and accuracy of laboratory equipment; arranges for the repair of equipment.
  • Functions in a staff role, including performance of tests at workstations, as workflow and workload require.
  • Implements, maintains, documents and assists in the development of an effective quality assurance/quality control program; meets reporting schedules and standards.
  • Organizes and interprets data and reports the results to principal investigator, study nurses and study monitors.
  • Participates in planning and setting goals for the maintenance and development of activities and resources appropriate for the requirements of the laboratory.
  • Participates in the preparation of papers for publication and presentation at meetings. Works with principal investigator and study nurses to solve study protocol problems.
  • Prepares, monitors and manages annual capital, labor and operating laboratory budgets.
  • Responsible for following the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
  • Responsible for the selection and supervision of assigned staff.
  • Selects methods and performs procedures for isolation and identification or organisms.
  • Writes, updates and maintains the laboratory policy and procedure manual according to department and hospital standards.


  • Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology or Bachelors Degree in Chemistry or Basic Science. 
  • At least four (4) years of post-graduate technical experience in a research environment. 
  • Previous experience as an assistant and/or laboratory supervisor in a research environment. 
  • Successful demonstration of the completion of the competencies required by the department/unit.
  • Proficient management and analytical skills. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to handle, process and evaluate specimens for testing.
