Description

Purpose:
The Pharmacy Assistant provides pharmaceutical care to patients within the UPMC Health System by primarily assisting with the organization, stocking, and distribution of medications while under the direct supervisor of a licensed pharmacist. The Pharmacy Assistant services are provided in compliance with Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations.

Responsibilities:
  • Conducts Unit Inspections: - Under supervision of pharmacist, conducts monthly unit inspections of designated areas of units and pharmacy. - Evaluates bi-weekly unit floor stock items and replenishes. - Performs expiration removal according to procedure.
  • Distribution: Develop and maintain positive and productive service relationship during medication distribution process.
  • Distribution: Participate in the distribution of medication including medication cassettes, emergency medication carts and the delivery of controlled substances per department policy and state and federal requirements.
  • Distribution: Retrieve medications that have been discontinued and return (and credits if necessary) them to the appropriate pharmacy area
  • Filling: Assist in filling medication orders through correct labeling, counting and stocking practices. Initial and date products as required.
  • Filling: Assist in the preparation of the proper oral medications for the correct patient for administration at the appropriate time. Use proper technique in the preparation of medications.
  • General: Develop and maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked work environment.
  • General: Ensure that all medications in all areas have been safely and securely stored according to Department of Health, The Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations.
  • General: Maintain all pertinent documentation as required. This includes eye wash logs, refrigerator logs, perpetual inventory logs etc.
  • General: Practice appropriate hand hygiene both in the pharmacy and in the units.
  • General: Provide and received information (via telephone, person-to-person, or written) to hospital personnel, patients and visitors. Refer all drug information questions to Staff Pharmacists.
  • General: Use computer skills to process and maintain all patient information and records.
  • General: comply with Federal and State laws such as HIPAA, regulations such as OSHA, and PBM contracting requirements such as FWA and CMS.
  • General: finalize sales using cash register, follow proper cash handling policies and procedures
  • Intern Duties: - Assist with evaluating compliance with JCAHO standards. - Complete quarterly measures to ensure compliance with JCAHO standards. - Participate in the formulary review process. - Assist with the evaluation of medication errors and adverse event experiences. - Assist with other project work as assigned.
  • Inventory Control: - Reviews pharmacy inventory on an ongoing basis. - Orders supplies as necessary via HC Central and puts away when delivered. - Rotates stock based on expiration date. - Repackages unit dose medications according to procedure. - Documents backordered and discontinued items. - Prepares and sends returns to HC Central. - Able to cross bill internal institutions for borrowed medication. - Follows all processes related to the inventory initiative.
  • Other Technical Duties: - Documents patient medications on a routine basis. - Compounds capsules for research protocols according to policy and under supervision of pharmacist. - Other Technical duties as assigned.
  • Preparation of Narcotic Medications: - Accurately fills AcuDose restock requests for narcotics. - Accurately and completely documents all activities regarding narcotic agents. - Assists in resolving narcotic discrepancies.
  • Preparation of Sterile Products: - Completes annual departmental certification program. - Prepares sterile intravenous products according to department policy. - Conducts environmental testing as assigned. - Cleans barrier isolator and documents this activity weekly. - Maintains cleanliness of barrier isolator on a regular basis.
  • Prepares Medication: - Under supervision of pharmacist, accurately fills physician orders and delivers medications to units. - Exchanges unit cassettes. - Reviews census. - Maintains cleanliness of cassettes and pharmacy area medication carts
  • Utilization of Computer Systems: - Understanding of utilizing Pharmnet - order review, refilling medications, replacing missing medications. - Accurately credits/debits patient profiles via Pharmnet & Connect-Rx. - Utilize HSL Online for identifying patient medications, and printing patient information. - Utilizes email effectively.

Qualifications

Completion of high school diploma or equivalent required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CCM training is required within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter

  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Comprehensive Crisis Management
