The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh has an immediate opening for a full-time biostatistician (with Master’s degree) to collaborate and conduct analyses on completed and ongoing research projects.  Under the supervision of a faculty Biostatistician, and in collaboration with Department of Psychiatry investigators, the successful candidate will assist with several research projects to analyze data and interpret and communicate results, as well as participate in grant development.  Specific responsibilities are as follows:

  • Data Analysis: The individual will select appropriate statistical methods (including both classical and modern approaches), create variables and datasets as needed, and apply the methods to analyze data and interpret the results.  The individual will prepare and present oral and written reports of findings, including tables and graphical displays.
  • Develop Reports and Manuscripts: The individual will assist in the development of reports or manuscripts for peer-review, including but not limited to scholarly journals.  Additional duties may include review of statistical components of protocols for scientific or IRB review and/or statistical analysis plans.
  • Grant Development: The individual will participate in the development of research study designs. This will include selecting appropriate statistical analysis methods and conducting sample size and power calculations.  The individual will collaborate on the development of research or project grant applications and contribute to grant writing. 
This position is grant funded.

  • Collaborate closely with outside investigators as needed to complete publications etc.
  • Design and carry out statistical analysis
  • Document analyses and constructs used in analysis.
  • Participate in the preparation of manuscripts and research reports and presentations from data generated by these studies.
  • Write new programs for data analysis and conduct new data analysis as needed.


  • Masters degree in Biostatistics or Epidemiology is strongly preferred.
  • Masters degree in Statistics, Psychology, or a related Social Science field is required.
  • One year of relevant experience with statistical analyses and packages (e.g. SAS, SPSS, R) and Microsoft Office components (e.g. EXCEL, Word, PowerPoint) preferably in research setting.
  • Excellent communication and collaborative skills, both oral and written. Interest in learning about diverse areas of psychiatric, sleep, and circadian research.
