Excellent opportunity to improve your work life balance at the Western Maryland Health System located in Cumberland, Maryland. We are seeking a staff perfusionist to join the manager performing approximately 150 cardiac procedures/year. Cases are generally elective CABG, OPCABG, and valves, with rare ECMO insertion. The two-person team will share call responsibilities.

Western Maryland Health System facilities are in western Maryland in proximity to south-central Pennsylvania. This location and clinical schedule offer a quality of work-life balance. The area offers abundant outdoor and cultural activities, including restaurants, theatre, golf courses, hiking trails, water sports, skiing, and historical tours.  Additionally, area communities are a short drive from several, large metropolitan areas including the Baltimore/DC metro area, and Pittsburgh.

This position is eligible for a generous sign-on bonus. 

  • Able to travel 25% of the time.
  • Administer medications, blood components, and anesthetic agents under the supervision by the attending physicians.
  • Assist in the evaluation of new equipment.
  • Assists other staff members and hospital personnel in completion of needed tasks; and makes patient care and/or interdepartmental service the number one priority.
  • If employed at UPMC facility, participate with coverage and call for STAT MedEvac responsibilities.
  • If employed at UPMC facility, serve as instructor/supervisor to UPMC School of Cardiovascular Perfusion
  • Instruct students, residents and others in new procedures and equipment.
  • Maintain equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain proficiency with accessory equipment and procedures.
  • Make appropriate changes in therapy after consultation with the attending physician(s).
  • Participate as assigned with the ordering and maintenance of supplies..
  • Participate in on-call schedule per institutional policy.
  • Participate with development and revision of: policy and procedure, performance improvement, quality management, and staff education.
  • Perform documentation associated with described responsibilities.
  • Perform duties and responsibilities according to the philosophy and standards of UPMC including conveying courtesy, respect, enthusiasm, and positive attitude in work situations with patients, peers, medical staff, and visitors.
  • Perform equipment maintenance checklists as required.
  • Perform responsibilities outside the home-base hospital.
  • Provide perfusion support for non-cardiac procedures such as: transplantation, chemoperfusion, ECMO, cardiac support devices, component therapy, and blood recovery.
  • Safely conduct perfusion scope of practice.
  • Support Procirca contractual obligations.
  • Support continuing education and research as required by the perfusionist's scope of practice.


Graduation from a CAAHEP accredited school of cardiovascular perfusion or met Grandfather Clause of the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion and Pennsylvania Licensing Board.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Certified or certification-eligible as per guidelines of the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion within 24 months of hire date. Pennsylvania licensure according to House Bills 500 and 501 CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
