UPMC Presbyterian is excited to be hiring an Immunohistochemistry Development Technician to help support the histology lab! This role will be scheduled Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  

Organize, coordinate and develop technical components of new methodology and staining techniques and antibodies for immunohistochemistry (IHC). Oversee instruction of new personnel, instruct faculty, fellows and residents in techniques and concepts, assist Supervisor with workflow and other operational areas of the lab.

  • Assist the supervisor in identifying variations and methods to correct problem areas and control the immunohistochemistry area's productivity and utilization of time and workflow.
  • Develop, evaluate, implement and perform new methodology and antibody staining techniques.
  • Ensure a safe working environment in the IHC laboratory.
  • Initiate and oversee the teaching and training of technicians, new personnel and students.
  • Initiate development and deployment of new antibodies in the laboratory based on physician need for patient care.
  • Instruct faculty, fellows, residents and selected technical personnel in techniques and concepts likely to be used in the IHC lab.
  • Keep abreast of literature and test novel antibodies for possible application in daily practice. Continuously update and oversee current antibodies, and investigate for improved methods of staining with current antibodies, as well as different titers, etc.
  • Keep abreast of new developments in the field of IHC and pursue self development programs.
  • Maintain the immunohistochemistry area of the laboratory according to the standards and requirements of the College of American Pathologists, Joint Committee for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, and all other local and federal governing agencies.
  • Organize work schedule and tasks on a daily basis to coordinate the workflow of developmental and validation work being done in the laboratory.
  • Oversee the implementation, validation and evaluation of all new equipment used in the IHC area.
  • Prepare the monthly QA reports of the immunohistochemistry area.
  • Supervise and oversee the maintenance and update of the immunoperoxidase manuals continuously for the proper and efficient operation of the area.
  • Supervise the preparation of immunohistochemical dilutions for optimal staining.
  • Troubleshoot the monitoring of the proper operation, maintenance, and cleaning of all IHC equipment used in the lab with a complete understanding of equipment function.


  • Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program w/in the last 5 years 
  • or an Associates degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry.
  • B.S. degree in Biological Science, Basic Science, Chemistry or related field is preferred. 
  • 5 years of clinical labratory experience is required.
  • Experience in Immunohistochemistry preferred. 
  • GIHC certification preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • HTL (ASCP) certification is preferred.
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
  • American Society for Clinical Pathology

Salary Range: $20.30 to $33.86 / hour
