UPMC Health Plan is seeking an Actuarial Analyst for its downtown Pittsburgh location at the U.S. Steel Tower.  This position applies knowledge of mathematics, probability and statistics in order to identify issues, gather and analyze data on a wide variety of topics affecting the financial performance of the health plan. May represent the department on corporate projects. Receives assistance from either management or senior positions when necessary.


  • Assist in the preparation of State and Federal filings.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial analyses in support of the following functions:
  • Assist senior actuarial positions in the development of mathematical models in connection with other departments to predict the impact of proposed changes.
  • Completion factors using claim lag analysis models.
  • Development of claim reserves (IBNR).
  • Document methods, procedures and results.
  • Forecasting.
  • Medical cost and utilization trend analysis.
  • Present results of analyses and recommendations to management.
  • Provide ad hoc data analysis to all departments within the company.
  • Provide analytical support for rate development and filings.



  • Bachelors degree in mathematics, statistics, actuarial science, economics or related field.
  • Some experience in statistical analysis or actuarial work preferred.
  • 1 or more actuarial examinations passed.
  • Actively pursuing SOA certification.
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong PC skills.
  • Data retrieval skills and relational database experience.
  • Works independently.

Salary Range: $24.99 to $43.25 / hour
