UPMC has an exciting opportunity for a Sr. Advisor, Health Economics at its downtown Pittsburgh location at the U.S. Steel Tower. The Sr. Advisor, Health Economics brings together a diverse set of senior skills and experience, including advanced analytics methods, broad-based business and health economics acumen, and insights derived from consulting experience relating to national approaches to business strategies in the healthcare reform era. The Senior Advisor, Health Economics reports to the Vice President, Health Economics, and serves as a critical member of the Health Economics leadership team, which continuously transforms the decision support needs of Insurance Services Division executive leadership into actionable and impactful analytics efforts. 

 

The Sr. Advisor, Health Economics must demonstrate credibility and thought leadership on multiple, diverse fronts, including but not limited to the ability to build recognition as a thought leader among clinical, financial, operations, and information technology executive leadership; engage with senior scientists to identify new opportunities for application of scientific methods to provide actionable insight regarding current business issues; lead development of business case-style assessments of initiatives proposed by clinical or other business units to support investment decisions; and inform development of strategic business modeling and simulation activities based on insights derived from national-level consulting experience and economic modeling expertise. The Senior Advisor, Health Economics will leverage his/her diverse, senior-level experience to drive an enhanced business proposition for analytics services developed and delivered to internal and external customers.

Responsibilities:

  • Apply first-hand knowledge of best practices, gleaned from national-level consulting leadership and technology domain experience, to further DOHE's efforts at data enhancement and data integrity for the purpose of supporting advanced analytics, including use of non-traditional sources such as social media, marketing data sources, and other private and publicly-available sources.
  • As a member of the Division of Health Economics leadership team, bring innovative strategic and tactical analytics ideas to the table to grow the value proposition for DOHE within the Insurance Services Division.
  • As a member of the Division of Health Economics leadership team, provide extensive mentorship for DOHE staff with respect to Insurance Services Division operations and relevant business context for analytics efforts. Establish continuous improvement efforts to raise the bar regarding staff ability, apply knowledge of the business in day-to-day analytics efforts.
  • Engage business units across the UPMC Health Plan as needed for contribution of data (numerical, political, etc.) to support the system dynamics modeling portfolio.
  • Respond to requests from, and serve as a senior advisor to, UPMC Insurance Services Division executive management for business analyses, models, and simulations that enable C-level decision making at the strategic and tactical levels.
  • Support efforts within DOHE, and led by the Director, Health Economics, to enhance financial impact analysis for clinical and other programs by overlaying a business plan-based perspective on financial analysis. Use senior level experience and ability to influence senior leaders, to set expectations for this methodology among ISD departments that create new program initiatives that are subject to DOHE ROI evaluation.
  • Support efforts within DOHE, and led by the Director, Health Economics, to enhance strategic business modeling and simulation capabilities by contributing best-practice perspectives gained through national-level consulting experience.
  • Support the Chief Analytics Officer and Executive Director, Health Economics by engaging with senior executives on a daily basis regarding analytics support for strategic and tactical business decisions.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in a quantitative discipline that emphasizes applied analysis of complex systems such as Statistics, Decision Science, Economics, Operations Research/Operations Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Health Services Research or related field. PhD highly preferred. Equivalent work experience specifically related to practical application of advanced analytics modeling to complex business systems will be considered.
  • Ten (10) or more years of experience in quantitative methods or other relevant work is required.
  • Ten (10) or more years of healthcare insurance industry and/or healthcare delivery industry experience is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated advanced business acumen in a senior leadership role that integrates analytics, operations, and financial principles, is required.
  • Extensive experience with formulation and practical application of business models to accurately simulate complex business systems is required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex strategic and technical findings to Sr. Management decision makers, including the C-suite, are required.
  • Ability to influence senior decision makers is a must. Demonstrated leadership experience in a healthcare industry consulting role, engaging clients at the national level, is highly desired.
  • Person must demonstrate a high degree of professionalism, enthusiasm, and initiative on a daily basis. Ability to work in a fast-paced, complex environment is a must.
  • Attention to detail is critical to the success of this position, as is the ability to establish collaborative working relationships across business units that include colleagues with diverse clinical and business skill sets and analytics acumen.
