Assist the Director as assigned in all aspects of Oncology Pharmacy Services within the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center hematology malignancy program, including the outpatient BMT and immunotherapy programs. This would include, but not limited to, providing comprehensive oncology pharmacy clinical services at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center 4th floor outpatient hematology malignancy clinics, as well as transitions of care within the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center outpatient network and inpatient oncology units at UPMC Presbyterian-Shadyside (Shadyside Campus), participate in a wide variety of patient and staff educational activities, partake in departmental quality improvement and development initiatives, assist with clinical trials for patients on protocol and participate in the PGY2 Oncology Residency program. This clinical oncology pharmacist will need to have extensive clinical experience as well as a working knowledge of aspects of evidence-based medicine, pathway/guideline development, oncology/hematology policy development, oncology/hematology reimbursement and coverage, clinical research, and drug development. This position will be an outpatient position, primarily servicing the outpatient BMT and immunotherapy programs. The dispensing of medications is not within the scope of this position.

The primary responsibilities of this position include, but not limited to, the following:
  • Assist with the decision making process in the selection of appropriate evidence-based prophylaxis, chemotherapeutic, and supportive care regimens based on the extent of disease, patient performance status and desired outcome for the treatment of a variety of malignant and nonmalignant conditions including patient specific and system-wide treatment plans. Oversee the writing of chemotherapy orders primarily within outpatient BMT and outpatient immunotherapy clinics.
  • Facilitate compliance with Cancer Centers' and Hospital directives by evaluating and overseeing the appropriate use of high-cost and highly toxic therapies in order to assure suitable control of drug budgets and reimbursement. This includes knowledge of national and local health policy directives.
  • Participate in the creation and revision of policies and procedures pertaining to hematology malignancy program, oncology/hematology medication patient education materials, and order sets for UPMC Hillman Cancer Center hematology malignancy program.
  • Responsible for providing pharmaceutical care for the Cancer Centers via direct communication, email, or page for patients within the outpatient hematology malignancy program.
  • Direct and manage supportive care management of patients (anti-emetics, pain control, growth factors, anti-microbial prophylaxis, prevention of tumor lysis syndrome, etc).
  • Advise in the administration of dangerous and toxic chemotherapies and immunotherapies.
  • Assist with managing narrow therapeutic and highly toxic drugs in individuals based on comorbidities, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, altered metabolism and elimination, based on renal and/or hepatic function, by directing, monitoring and maintaining therapeutic drug serum concentrations to prevent excessive and unwanted toxicity and outcomes.
  • Plan for and direct the treatment of chemotherapy spills, extravasation of vesicants and irritants, and management of hypersensitivity/anaphylactic reactions.
  • Assist in determining patient access to limited access medications. This requires a working knowledge of national and local insurance coverage as well as pharmaceutical assistance programs.
  • Communicate with inpatient oncology clinical pharmacy team to ensure an effective continuum of care for the patients.
  • Provide disease state and drug therapy education for the Cancer Centers' physicians and staff. This may include; written reviews, maintenance of pharmacy intranet information, teaching didactic lectures, conducting continuing education lectures, and facilitating small group topic discussions.


Doctor of Pharmacy degree.  
PGY1 residency, and PGY2 (hematology / oncology specialty) residency (with bone marrow transplant experience preferred) and/or fellowship training or equivalent clinical experience are required.  
Extensive knowledge of clinical research, drug development, and research regulations within institutions.

  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
  • Pharmacist

Salary Range: $46.26 to $78.57 / hour
