UPMC Health Plan has an exciting opportunity for a Senior UX Designer in its Consumer Innovation department, located in downtown Pittsburgh at the Heinz 57 Center. The Senior UX Designer will transform tasks into intuitive, accessible and easy-to-use designs through the entire experience lifecycle, from the first-time user to the expert.


He/she will influence the design direction and strategy. This individual will execute visual, information, interaction, and service design elements of the initiative that meets business and customer needs and delights customers, while communicating the initiative and product to others (Business Partners) through user journeys, storyboards, prototypes, wireframes, and other materials.


  • Business Acumen: Knowledge of related technologies, techniques and business practices. Able to associate and evaluate business metrics such as ROI and KPI related to ongoing business needs. Create service solutions that positively impact the health care and health insurance experiences.
  • Design and Creativity: Demonstrate a body of work that showcases concepts, prototypes, and final deliverables informed by user insights. Exhibit exceptional understanding of human-centered design best practices, standards, and user interface design. Evaluate existing consumer products and experiences for actionable critique and improvements. Create tools informed by research, such as personas, journey maps, service blueprints, importance/difficulty matrix, etc., to inform the overall design process. Effectively communicate research findings and present design recommendations by demonstrating superior oral and visual communication abilities.
  • Facilitation and Communication: Ability to design and facilitate a group process, elicit contributions from group members, stimulate a focused group discussion, and achieve a desired outcome. Ability to communicate complex ideas in an easy to digest format utilizing a variety of media and effective storytelling. Collaborate and communicate effectively with other designers and business and technology stakeholders on multiple projects.
  • Process Management and Lifecycle: Ability to prioritize amid demands and time constraints while meeting deadlines and schedules as required to develop and bring products into marketplace. Proven track record of taking high-profile projects from concept to completion, aligning stakeholders, clients and contributors.
  • Research and Analytics: Demonstrate a strong design-led and human-centered approach to research. Proficient in the creation and synthesis of several of the following: surveys, interviews, participation activities, analytics reporting, digital user testing, etc. Identify opportunities for design innovation in healthcare through rich ethnographic, analogous, and design-led research practice.
  • Team Leadership and Mentorship: Ability to independently lead and manage projects that are highly collaborative. Ability to guide staff and project teams with enthusiasm, patience, and a positive attitude to achieve project successes and professional development. Design and lead workshops and other activities to identify business goals, establish priorities, align needs, generate ideas, present findings, etc. Independently lead and manage projects that are highly collaborative.   • Bachelor's degree in design, UX, product development, communication, anthropology, psychology or related discipline from an accredited college or university (or comparable degree and/or experience.)
  • Masters degree preferred, but not required.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in a consumer product design, service design, product development or related role (required). Related educational experience including internship/externship will be considered.
  • Minimum of 4 years conducting qualitative and quantitative research through methods such as interviewing, observation, surveys, participation activities, and document and literature reviews. Successful synthesis and analysis of findings.
  • Experience in the health care or insurance industries a plus.
  • Experience leading the entire design process from user research, insights, ideation, prototyping & iteration, detailed design and bridging to implementation.
  • Experience with digital product development with proven ability to translate business and user problems into solid solutions (preferred).
  • Experience in the following with depth of expertise in several of the following: Information Architecture, User Research, Usability Testing, Interaction Design, Content Strategy, Human Factors, Visual and Information Design, Ethnographic Research.
  • Working knowledge of design tools including but not limited to Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Axure,, Optimal Workshop, or equivalent software.

Salary Range: $34.96 to $59.20 / hour
