Nursing support staff give personal care to patients with an emphasis on dignity and respect, striving to make each patient feel as comfortable as possible during their hospital stay. Patient Care Technicians also provide invaluable aid to nurses and doctors on the floor by completing important skilled tasks such as checking vital signs and glucose levels, performing EKGs and blood draws, and much more.


UPMC Passavant is hiring a Casual Patient Care Technician to support

4 South. 4 South is a surgical progressive care unit.  This unit has 24 private beds.  The patient population consists of those individuals requiring a higher level of care than can be provided on the medical-surgical floors but do not require an ICU level of care. 

Typical patients seen on this unit are: post vascular surgery, post open heart surgery, post heart cath, post defibrillator/pacemaker insertion, CHF, anyone with a cardiac arrhythmia requiring medicine to control heart rate, stroke, high oxygen requirements and those on IV insulin drips.


As a Casual Patient Care Technician, you will be able to work shift that fit your schedule. You will be required to work a minimum of 8 hours every 2 weeks.

Experienced applicants may be hired at the Patient Care Technician level; those without prior inpatient hospital experience will be required to complete a 7-day training course. (Note: the training course is held over 7 consecutive weekdays during daylight hours.)

 

Responsibilities:

  • Performs the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, and Foley care) AND at least four of the following business unit identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter or IV catheter removal.
  • Provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living. Assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.
  • Documents in the medical record according to established procedures.
  • Contributes to the universal unit activities including, but not limited to, responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.
  • Provides instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN. May apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.

Qualifications

  • Second year nursing student - Preferred 
  • One round of clinical rotations Required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 34
