The Magee Obstetric Maternal & Infant (MOMI) Database and Biobank was created to advance scientific understanding of maternal and infant health. The MOMI group are trained staff responsible for consenting women and collecting specimens across pregnancy. This team is critically important to the continuation of cutting-edge research at the Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation.

The Research Manager III role will be responsible for coordinating implementation and execution of the Magee Obstetric Maternal & Infant Biobank and Database. They will also be supervising staff and reviewing and creating standard operating procedures (SOP).

The ideal candidate is a leader who is able supervise a team, monitor and revise SOPs as needed, and provide insights as to the future direct and growth of MOMI Biobank.

This position is grant funded.


Manage research laboratory within laboratory and MWRI/MWH policies, procedures, and guidelines and according to applicable authority levels, laws and regulations.

  • Participate in planning and setting goals for the maintenance and development of activities and resources appropriate for the requirements of the laboratory.
  • Required to have an understanding of practices and procedures.
  • Solutions may include modifying procedures and methods to address new conditions.
  • Occasionally receives advice and input as needed from faculty supervisor.
  • Assist senior investigator(s) in the design and plan of protocols and experiments for research projects.
  • Develop curriculum materials for an educational session(s).
  • Prepare, monitor and manage annual capital, labor and operating laboratory budgets.
  • Program complex scientific and mathematical problems for solutions on a computer.
  • Individual's actions are not limited to a single work area and have a significant effect on the outcome of the research.
  • Coordinate all research activities, including data collection, data input, evaluation and analysis for a segment of a research project.
  • Ensure the operational efficiency and accuracy of laboratory equipment; arranges for the repair of equipment.
  • Has responsibility for interviewing, orientation, scheduling, work assignment and occasional input as needed from faculty supervisor.
  • Develop and maintain an organizational plan for the laboratory.
  • Supervise library and computer searches for research data.
  • Resolves unique problems by collecting and interpreting information.
  • Write, update and maintain the laboratory policy and procedure manual according to department and hospital standards.
  • Perform complex scientific data reductions requiring the use of independent judgment.
  • Develop and implement solutions to solve study protocol problems.
  • Ensure that the laboratory meets applicable department, hospital and regulatory safety and fire requirements.
  • Significant interaction outside of own work area and the MWRI.
  • Organize and interpret data and reports the results to principal investigator, study nurses and study monitors.
  • Perform laboratory procedures and tests. Analyze and interprets the results.
  • Responsible for following the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
  • Participate in the preparation of papers for publication and presentation at meetings. 
  • Solicit information from principal investigator and study nurses.
  • The results of actions have a significant impact on a faculty investigator's research operation, with negative actions having a devastating impact on a faculty investigator's research operation.
  • Implement, maintain, document and assist in the development of an effective quality assurance/quality control program; meets reporting schedules and standards.


  • Bachelors, Masters or Doctoral Degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry or Basic Science. 
  • At least 10 years (Bachelors)/8 years (Masters)/2 years (Doctorate) of post-graduate technical experience in a research environment.
  • At least 2-3 years in a supervisory capacity with a staff of at least 2 and responsibility over at least 3 extramural research studies. 
  • Previous experience as a Research Assistant, Research Associate and/or Laboratory Supervisor in a research environment.
  • Proficient management and analytical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle, process and evaluate specimens for testing.
  • Regulatory experience preferred.
