Description

Purpose:
Responsible for the day-to-day functions of the andrology and immunoassay laboratories. Communicates with the laboratory director with respect to the andrology and immunoassay laboratories. May become involved in research studies pertaining to the above named laboratories. Is proficient in all aspects of testing and/or sample preparation in both the andrology and immunoassay laboratories.

Responsibilities:
  • Is responsible for the coordination of male surgical procedures with urologist that need to be cryopreserved for in-vitro fertilization. This would include preparation of testicular biopsies and epididymal aspirations. Reports to urologist about findings and recommends whether specimen is adequate for cryopreservation.
  • Prepares sperm for artificial insemination. Reports to nurse and/or physician as to problems involving adequate specimen for insemination. Makes modifications to accommodate sample variations and/or deficiencies. This includes preparation of donor sperm.
  • Participates in research and/or studies that are conducted that involve andrology and/or immunoassays.
  • Performs routine semen analysis including count, motility, morphology and anti-sperm antibodies. Makes decisions as to any additional testing that may be needed to help physician accurately determine diagnosis and course of treatment.
  • Records all daily quality control and quality assurance checks and reports to the laboratory director with regards to any problems.
  • Responsible for recording and distributing all results in a timely manner to referring physician for andrology and immunoassay laboratories.
  • Responsible for proper receipt, preparation, documentation, and distribution of all tissue received for fertility preservation per established policies and procedures.
  • Maintains adequate inventory supplies for the Fertility Preservation and Andrology Laboratories.
  • Responsible for recording daily equipment function checks on all equipment used in the Fertility Preservation and Andrology Laboratory as per established policies and procedures. Reports any variances or tolerance limit breeches to the Laboratory Manager or Laboratory Director in a timely manner
  • Performs testicular and ovarian tissue processing and freezing duties.
  • Maintains appropriate and thorough documentation of laboratory procedures and functions per established policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for assisting in the training of new and existing personnel as it pertains to new and existing job duties.
  • Remains abreast of the guidelines set for by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and ensures that the laboratory is functioning to fulfill our accreditation compliance requirements to the College of American Pathologists.
  • Remains abreast of the guidelines set forth by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) related to 21 CFR part 1271 regulation for the eligibility determination for donors of human cells, tissues, and cellular and tissue-based products (HCT/Ps). Responsible for understanding the regulations and how they affect the donor specimens (both anonymous and directed) that are processed, quarantined, and released for use within the laboratory.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelors degree in basic science, such as biology, chemistry or biochemistry and at least one year of experience in clinical research or a hospital laboratory or an associates degree in one of the afore mentioned fields and at least three years of experience in clinical research or a hospital laboratory. 
  • Andrology experience is preferred.
