We are currently hiring a full-time Staff Nurse to support the Ortho unit (4100) at our Oakland location. 4100 is a 30-bed medical-surgical orthopedic unit that primarily cares for patients who have undergone elective surgeries such as hip and knee replacements, and we also receive all of Magee’s post-op bariatric surgery patients. We frequently use specialty orthopedic equipment such as continuous passive motion machines and bed trapezes. This is a patient-centered rehabilitative unit, a great environment for someone who wants to be directly involved in rehab as well as care; we also receive an overflow of general med-surg patients, making 4100 a perfect fit for graduate nurses and nurses seeking to build broad knowledge and/or gain new experience. Our RNs work a rotating schedule to ensure 24/7 coverage on the floor.

The Professional Staff Nurse is a valued step in the UPMC nursing career ladder, with opportunities for continued growth and advancement; Graduate Nurses are encouraged to apply.  Title and salary will be determined based upon education and nursing experience. Six months experience is required for Professional Staff Nurses.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Applies the nursing process within the framework of Relationship Based Care to create a healing environment. Formulates daily goals and a plan of care for patients that involves the patient as partner and considers the individual needs of the patient in a holistic manner.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking in the identification of clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual issues for the patient within an episode of care.
  • Practices solid communication skills, and is able to articulate and translate the patient's condition to other care providers and to negotiate and make recommendations for changes in patient care and unit practices. Patient documentation is comprehensive and promotes communication between caregivers.
  • Creates a caring and compassionate patient-focused experience by building healing relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Incorporates national professional organization as well as business unit and health system goals to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction.

Qualifications

  • Zero to one year of experience, preferably graduated.
  • Completion of UPMC student nurse internship or student clinical transitions course at UPMC preferred
  • BSN preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Must complete licensure examination within FOUR MONTHS of hire or within one year of graduation, whichever comes first. Though temporary permits are valid for one year from the date of graduation, not one year from issue of permit (or until the results of the examination are known at which time it becomes null and void), UPMC requires that GNs take the licensure examination within 4 months of their start date or they will be
  • terminated or demoted from the GN position, at the discretion of the BU.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Registered Nurse (RN) OR Temporary Practice Permit (TPP)
