Purpose:
The Maintenance Engineer Lead is responsible for the daily supervision of all employees assigned. The position is responsible for supervising and performing an assortment of duties of engineer duties such as: operating, troubleshooting, testing and repair of the hospital's steam plant, steam distribution system, HVAC systems, chiller plant and chilled water distribution system, heating hot water distribution system, the pneumatic tube transport system, and refrigeration equipment. The Maintenance Engineer Lead is also responsible for scheduling and providing coverage for off-shifts, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for testing, treatment, monitoring, logging/tracking and adjustment of chemical treatment of steam boilers, cooling towers and closed hot water and chilled water systems.
  • Operates, maintains, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs the building management (DDC) system.
  • Operates, maintains, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs HVAC equipment to maintain proper environmental conditions.
  • Operates, maintains, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs refrigeration equipment, including ice machines and water coolers. 
  • Operates, maintains, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs medical air and medical vacuum systems.
  • Operates, maintains, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs the pneumatic tube transport system.
  • Responsible for investigating all equipment and operational problems on off-shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Responsible for medical gas inventory and deliveries. 
  • Responsible for obtaining quotes from vendors for material and/or services. Estimate the approximate cost of new installation into labor and material.
  • Work in close communication with department management, Infection Control, and EH&S to assure that the facility needs are met and efficient operation of the facility is not compromised.
  • Coordinate project work with Facilities Development contractors and end users to ensure completion of assignments in a timely manner with minimal interruption to operations.
  • Review, schedule and distribute all shop work orders on a daily basis.
  • Work with manager to ensure adequate staffing levels.
  • Responsible for setting-up appropriate level of infection control containment (ICRA) based on risk level and maintaining the integrity of that containment.
  • Operates, maintains, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs high pressure steam system and hot water boilers as well as the steam plant.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of appropriate codes and regulations.
  • Assure all staff are properly trained in job skills and safety procedures along with details of equipment and maintenance operation. Perform all work following infection control procedures; maintain clean and safe work areas.
  • Investigate, schedule, and plan service outages (including emergencies) when necessary for repair, alteration or additions to systems while not compromising safety or operation of facility operations.
  • Responsible for 24/7 coverage for the entire hospital.
  • Inspect work site for cleanliness and safety. Address and provide guidance to staff through technical issues that provide for safety and without compromise for facilities operations and patient care.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required. 
  • Any combination of two (2) years trade school background or three (3) years experience working as a stationary engineer or an HVAC mechanic is required. 
  • Building management system (DDC) knowledge preferred. 
  • Previous healthcare experience preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver's License. 
  • City of Pittsburgh Stationary Engineer License is preferred.  
  • EPA Universal Refrigerant License is preferred.
